Could endometriosis be missed on ultrasound?

I’ve been suffering all of the symptoms of endometriosis consistently since April 2017. I’m so confused and not sure where to turn as my external and transvaginal ultrasounds have come back clear. I’ve had blood tests, done stool samples and everything else under the sun. Is it possible endometriosis has been missed?

Endometriosis rarely ever shows up on scans or tests. The only way to diagnose it is through an exploratory laparotomy, a operation where they basically put a camera into the belly and examine the pelvis, internal organs etc, to look for endometriosis. Any and all scans and blood work are pretty mush useless in diagnosing endometriosis.

Hi I have been suffering with endo symptoms everyday since October 2017. I no how you feel! I have had scan after scan, stool tests, blood tests, cystoscopy and nothing has shown up!! Currently waiting for a laparoscopy as that is the only way to see if it's endo as it doesn't always show up in scans.. I would see push for a laparoscopy as what I have read seems to be the only way to know for sure. I hope you get some answers soon. It's awful not knowing what's going on.

Yes I had 3 ultrasounds which never showed endo but when I had my laparoscopy, they found it. It can generally only be seen during laparoscopies, although if it is deep infiltrating it can sometimes be seen on MRIs

Hey (:

I was diagnosed during a laparoscopy. Took a while as consultant kept saying your scans are clear! I had ultrasounds/trans vag scans/ CT/MRI Just shows it does not always show up. So keep pushing them

hi. I'm sorry you're struggling, endometriosis is hard to live with. Mine was missed on every test going, it was found during emergency surgery for a appendicitis ( was actually a ruptured chocolate cysts). I was referred to a specialist who had additional scans done and even he missed the stage 4 deep endometriosis I'm riddled with. Don't give up, keep going back till your heard, if you're in the position to research into a bsge specialist and have see if they do I private clinic ( you can then be put on their nhs list for treatment). In the meantime what type of pain control are you using? Diet had a huge impact on mine and might be worth looking into. Hope you get the help you need. Xx

Unless the ob/gyn is specialised in endometriosis, he/she cannot diagnose via ultrasound. There are no stool or blood test to diagnose it. You need an MRI or even better a laparoscopy to diagnose for sure.

In the meantime, assume you have it and discuss treatment with a specialised endo gynaecologist (not any gyn).

Please seek an expert asap!

Best of luck!

Hey Ec, the Endo is a mischievous little cu..

don’t trust the ultrasounds. Endo hides itself well. Go on the Nancy Nook endometriosis education on Fb. You will have a vast knowledge on this issue with the right docs to guide you. Don’t lose hope.
