Cervical ectropion (cervical erosion)

My lap is today and I’ve just read (stupidly not before today) that I’ve got this- is it something I need to be worried about? Will they sort it out in theatre? Or just leave it? Is it associated with endo?

I’ve been on Decapeptyl for three months and that’s helped greatly

I’m so scared they’re not gona find anything despite me having an endometrioma 4 years ago. Am I being silly?

Any words of wisdom would be great at this point!

Thanks ladies! Xxx

Hey,

I had this before they suspected endo.

It's where the sensitive cells further up the cervix appear at the base, and so can be irritated easily; causing pin prick feelings at random times and during sex or pressure on the cervix, there can be occasional random spotting and spotting after sex, recurrent thrush / bacterial infections. It isn't associated with endo but the two can occur at the same time. It often presents with similar symptoms. There are a few ways it can be treated all of which require a speculum up the vagina. The cells can be lasered off, removed by chemicals, or by cutting a bit away. It depends on how the surgeon / specialist feels about which they prefer. All are really effective and it's not something that comes back quickly, but you will have regular smear tests and it will be in your notes so they'll keep an eye on it. As will all procedures they require no sex or putting anything up there for about two weeks but then so does a lap. The cutting away can be a bit more painful and crampy.

My GP noticed it during a smear test, and the results came back inconclusive so she did additional swabs, that's how we found out what it was. I was getting spotting, recurrent thrush and sharp needle pains. I had the chemical removal under local anesthetic; it felt weird but was okay. I think it's only privately that they do the chemical method, most do cutting it out.

They won't usually look at that during a lap unless you're also booked for a hysteroscopy (camera up vaginal and cervix into uterus). It may be worth asking the surgeons secretary / clinic if you can have it removed (whichever way they do it) at the same time as your lap as it will mean it's all done. And recovery symptoms are the same - cramping, pain, spotting / bleeding so it won't be too bad. Plus you'll be signed off sick after your lap, whereas if you had the cervical ectropion removed at a different time it's just an outpatient procedure and you can go back to work that afternoon - I booked the next day off as holiday anyway.

As for not finding stuff during your lap; we all worry about that because we've spent years being told we're imagining it. Pain and stuff is not normal so you're doing the right thing. Also as you've had an endometria a while back you can have them regrow so it's best to get it all checked Worry about what they find / don't find after as that's next steps you can discuss with your specialist :) Little steps!

Hope that helps x

Farahziya you have been a great help and a fantastic source of information for me during the last few days. I am very grateful. I will make sure to ask the surgeon what he plans to do about it xxx
