Maybe a silly question..........

🎀 I hope you are all feeling well today ....

I see from some posts here that people have mentioned they are really sore in one of their shoulders from the surgery. Why is that?

I have been given information booklets from the NHS but nothing in them says about this pain.

It’s due to the gas that’s pumped into your stomach during surgery. They release as much as they can but some still gets trapped and it can travel up to your shoulder x

Not everyone gets it. Peppermint tea and a hot water bottle placed on your shoulder helps relieve it abit. Also just walking around even though it’s hard after surgery as it helps release the gas x

I absolutely hate the feeling of gas in the stomach, had this before and it’s horrendously sore & always feel it’s not ladylike letting it all go! Thanks for the tips, I will remember to take items with me x

It doesn't feel like normal trapped gas, especially since you feel it on the shoulder. The gas aggravates the diaphragm and you feel it in your shoulder. I didn't have it too bad but for some it's very painful.

Hopefully you won't experience it.

X

The gas pain can be a bitch 😂 I felt nothing for two days and then it was horrible for about a week. I had it in my right shoulder and my rib cage kept having spasms. It was like a sharp pain

It’s just from the gas they use to inflate your stomach.

Hot water bottle helps a bit but it was still uncomfortable at times especially at night xx

I didn’t find the shoulder pain too bad. It was a weird feeling and it was definitely not like I was expecting. I was burping loads. As soon as I came out of surgery I was burping haha. I think maybe I had released a lot of it quite soon so it didn’t affect me so much. I did have some peppermints which helped I suppose. I found rocking it moving helped too.

When I was given a leaflets and sheets at my pre op, it mentioned the shoulder pain in there.

Have you got a lap booked? If so, good luck, I hope it all goes well and the shoulder pain doesn’t affect you too much.

Hi Flossy13 thanks for sharing your experience. I am in the process of waiting for my appointment & it will be this year. I will remember & take mints with me x

Gas! They pump gas into your tummy to make it easier to operate, but I didn’t know this, I woke up feeling like I was about to have a heart attack! But it is normal, I used peppermint drops in water which helped ease it a little x

I had shoulder pain very badly after the operation - for me it was the worst thing about my recovery, and they gave no warning about it or much help in how to deal with it. They suggested walking around, but moving at all with it was very difficult.

After I recovered I looked up what really causes it and according to this private centre in the States, it can be greatly reduced by a) warming up the gas before it's injected and b) removing the gas at the end of the operation. centerforendo.com/post-surg...

Hi M-W23 thanks I will have a look at the article. Seems you go in to get one thing sorted then come out with another issue! x
