Merina Coil after Zolodez or Hysterectomy?

Hi All,

I’m in a quandary and need some help! Some history on my issues… Long term endo, 5 laparoscopys, 3 ICSI IVF cycles (1 wonderful Son) 1 Caesarean Section. 15 years of Endo hell and painful ovulation and periods. I’m 43 and I think I’m at the end of my fertility journey, we can’t afford anymore IVF and my body has been through enough. I took Progesterone only pill in January for 4 months, it was hell on earth, weight gain, mood swings, depression, bloating, contestant bleeding etc. I begged my consultant for zolodex which he obliged and I’ve had 4 monthly injections (and taken Tiblone HRT to combat hot flushes). He’s concluded it’s my ovaries causing the trouble and it’s all about management of symptoms. He now wants me to try Merina Coil and if that doesn’t work I’ll need a partial hysterectomy to remove ovaries.

So my question is, should I just skip the coil and go for surgery? My issues are all hormone related symptoms, moods, bleeding, pain, depression, weight gain, bloating, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety. I kind of think what’s the point of more ‘trying’ horrible hormones why don’t I just go for surgery. Menopause is coming anyway and it can’t be worse than what I’ve had to deal with up until now surely? I feel great on zolodex (I can cope with side effects) and after 4 months feel slightly more human than I ever have done! I am going to ask him if I can continue more zolodex, but I know that’s not a long term solution.

Hi, I'm on the Mirena coil, I'm 36 and was all set to argue for the hysterectomy with my consultant. She persuaded me to try this, I had it implanted in December, and although there were some minor teething issues, constant bleeding for a month, (very light compared to without it) and occasional spotting periods lasting a day! I feel the benefits out way the minor teething issues. You only have the hormone affect for four years so need to change it more often than

Other people do. For me it's given me more energy and better quality of life, without needing the major operation!

i Know it’s not for everyone but after trying so many different things the mirena coil is the only thing that has worked for me. Took about a year to settle completely but the benefits started about a month after insertion and for me it’s given me my life back. Hope you find what’s right for you. x

P.s I’m 46 and have been on it for 5 years (replaced the original after 4 years as felt it was failing).

That's really positive to hear. Thank you for sharing, I think I'd be crazy not to try it, I'll discuss with my consultant.

Just an update in case it helps others with the same quandary. I saw my consultant and we've agreed 2 more months on zolodex injections (total of 6) then coil in November. Give the coil 3 months but go on surgery list in November too so I don't have to wait double time in case coil doesn't work. He's promised me he will take it out as soon as I ask if I can't cope with symptoms! I'm lucky my consultant is amazing, it's taken me years to find him.
