First laparoscopy coming up

Hello,

My name is Oonagh and I’m due to have a diagnostic laparoscopy in 3 weeks to investigate if I have endometriosis as suspected. I’ve had symptoms for almost 2 years now. I’m quite nervous about the procedure but also can’t wait to finally know what’s going on! I’ve read piles of posts on here so think I’m well prepared for it and know what to expect but I have a few questions I wanted to know if anyone can help me with please :)

My doctor told me to book 1 week off work. I work as a carer to a teenage boy with autism so my job is very active and can be quite full on and stressful. Will 1 week be sufficient? Or is it depending on if they find anything or what they find and treat?

Has anyone had a lap to be told nothing was found?

I’m also meant to be traveling to the US with work 2 and a half weeks after the lap - will this be too soon? Unsure whether it’s unnecssary telling work I can’t go on the trip eventhough I know they’ll be understanding.

And lastly long did your scars take to heal?

Thanks Xx

I think that recovery time is different for everyone. I have had 2 laps done, one diagnostic in 2001 to diagnosis the endo. With that one, the worst part was the gas escaping, it felt like an elephant on my chest, it took a few days to get out. After that I was up and moving around in less than a week. The second lap I had was this past month along with a hysteroscopy and D&C. I had excision of endometriosis, lysis of adhesions, and they removed a cyst on an ovary. The amount of endo I had was extensive (I've had it for 20 years) they had to do a lot of work around my bladder and bowels, the one hour surgery turned into a 3 hour surgery. This time the gas pain wasn't as bad, but I had to stay in the bed the first few days, walking like an old lady, and very sore. I had a lot of incisions, the one in he belly button, one in one bikini line, one of each side and 4 small "holes" near my belly button. I only took Motrin 600 every 5-6 hours and that helped with my pain. I had the surgery on a Monday and I was at my daughters graduation on Friday and back at school the following Monday.

Thank you for replying and telling me your experience. I hope you’re doing well now!

I think I will just have to wait and see how the lap goes on the day and see how J feel afterwards and go from there. It seems like it’s such a different experience for everyone.

Thanks so much for replying! I am going to speak to work and explain the possibility that I may need more time off and also to see if I can fly a week later to avoid putting myself under unnecessary stress by flying if I don’t feel 100%. Thank you for the link you included, it was very helpful. I hope you’re doing well!

Hiya,

I had my first lap on Thursday and no endo was found but I was told my right ovary was stuck to the pelvic floor wall. They moved the ovary back into place there and then. I have found the pain after my lap was no worse than what I was experiencing before and I seem to of recovered from the op quite quickly. I was told to take 1 to 2 weeks off work. Because I'm a self-employed dog walker/trainer I have an active job to so booked 2 weeks off just to be on the safe side. I also can't afford to let customers down and would rather book to much time off than not enough and have to cancel any bookings last minute. I was struggling to go to work before my lap anyway and had to cut my hours down because of the pain. So I honestly don't feel any worse now to how I was before. Xx
