Consultation almost 5 months after surgery?

Hi, hope you’re all well! I had excision/diagnostic surgery just under 2 weeks ago and had endometriosis excised from the POD. My recovery has been slow, but I’m starting to eat a lot more than I have in the past 9 months and THINK I feel better (I’m still very fatigued/still slightly poorly after surgery so it’s hard to tell!). I’m not getting the daily morning sickness/diarrhoea anymore anyway so life is sweet!

My consultant is a top endometriosis specialist, so I expected a bit more in terms of follow up. Luckily I did a lot of research on endo, so I’m not completely lost after diagnosis... but it’d still be good to have a follow up appointment regardless. He came to speak to me after the surgery and explained briefly what he found (LOADS of blood floating around my abdomen apparently 🤮), but this was 2 mins tops.

I’ve just received a letter from the consultant explaining that it might take several months for me to feel better, so therefore he’ll see me in October. Is this standard practice? I would’ve expected a post-op appointment maybe a month after? I had one that was made for me in less than 2 weeks time but then the hospital cancelled it after I received this recent letter from the consultant.

Thanks for reading!

That is odd!! Do you have his secretary’s phone number? I’d give them a call, explain you had a much earlier appointment and you have concerns you wish to discuss before October!!

I do, but the last time I spoke to her she said she only deals with private and not NHS! I might go to the doctors and see what they say. Thanks

I have the exact same issue! I had a lap 3 weeks ago and the surgeon said it was VERY messy inside and no wonder i was in so much pain.. and then no mention of a post op follow up appointment!! So odd!!

Ive just contacted his secretary and told her im still in alot of pain and wish to be seen by my surgeon, to which she has literally just replied as i am typing this that she will fit me in clinic with him this week so it’s deffo worth a try! I dont think its a follow up appointment but atleast he will see me regarding why i am still in so much pain xxx all the best xxx

Sorry to hear about the results from your lap! It’s strange isn’t it... glad you got an appointment. I’m gonna go to the doctors and see what they say

Strange :(

Glad you're recovering well !!!

I had my post op appointment 2 weeks after lap to go through what they found and what they removed, checking I am okay to go back to work (I was signed off for two weeks) - what else to do etc. The another at 4 months to see how my recovery is going and what my next steps would be.

I guess if the hospital cancelled, perhaps be prepared and make a GP appointment to discuss results and what to do next regarding recovery - they'll have all your notes, they may not be as thorough but it's a start. If you feel you need more info after that you could contact the hospital or get your GP to talk to the specialist you saw?

Thank you! Ah that’s what I was expecting! I’ll make a doctors appointment for next week 😊

I'm sorry that it's going to take that long for them to go through things with you. I don't know if you can get an appointment more quickly. Im not surprised at the wait though, where I live there's so much pressure on the NHS I didn't even get a post-op consultation and had to pester my nurses after my lap to tell me what stage endo I even had! I discussed the next steps with my new GP who luckily happened to know a lot about endo, so that could be another option for the meantime?

Really hope that everything continues to go in the right direction for your recovery and that you get the answers and clarity for your diagnosis that you deserve soon. Xx

Yeah the wait is immense, doesn’t help my consultant is one of the top ones in the area so I’m lucky I even got the surgery when I did! Thanks for the well wishes 😊

Hi

I had my surgery last week 26th June I have stage 3 endo it was a fairly long op & my follow up appointment should be 8 weeks as advised by my surgeon after it- however for letter few days after it’s for 5th Dec - 6 months later.

All I can think is we aren’t urgent cases to be followed up with ? Plus NHS back log ...never the less it’s baffling.

Thanks

My surgery was the beginning of June and the surgeon recommended three months for a follow up. Got the letter through and it's five months from my operation! From being diagnosed with ovarian cysts (which the ultrasound person thought were possible endometrioma's) to my lap was five months.

I phoned up just to ask if there was anything closer and they said they were fully booked, but to try calling again to see if there are any cancellations. I think I'm going to call once a week just to check on cancellations, I have too many questions to wait five months!
