Who signs you off work after your lap?

Hi I have my lap booked in for next month and was just wondering who it is that actually signs you of work whether it’s for one week or two? I’ve had a lap before and when I asked the woman in my pre op assessment she was really dismissive like ‘oh you only need a few days off’. Now my last lap they literally only cut into me and realised my endo was more severe than what they thought so closed me up for another surgery where they could be more prepared and for that I needed a week off to recover. So I’m worried that this time I will need two weeks off without getting anything to show work that I need longer than a week off. So is it your gp that does it or the surgeon? Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Hi, I had a lap done in January and when I was admitted they asked if I needed a sick note so when I was discharged they had it ready and it was the surgeon that signed it off. I only had a lap and dye but I needed a week off.

They asked me whether I would need a note at pre-op and had it ready for me to take home the day after surgery. I was signed off for 2 weeks from hospital and my GP signed me off for an additional week.

In my case it was the surgeon herself but I live in the US so it may not be the same process for you if you're in the UK. I was fortunate in that my boss was supportive and told me to take as much time as I needed. Is your work supportive and is there anyone there you could talk to about how you may not know in advance if you'll need one week or two? Good luck and I hope you get the time you need.

Yeah my work is supportive it’s more for the records they need a sick note if it’s longer for a week. And if I don’t get signed off the first week I’ll have to call in every day 🙄 lol. I guess I’ll jusy have to ask at the pre op and hope it goes better than last time. Thanks for your reply x

My surgeon didn’t do it but after a week I went to my GP and was signed off for a few more days by her.

Thanks for your reply. I have a feeling this is what will happen with me but I feel better knowing at least I can go to my gp and get signed off for longer than a week. Was it easy to get the gp to sign you off or do you have to try and convince them?

Really easy. I went on day five after my lap and she gave me another week.

I've always been signed off by the GP who hasn't need any convincing. I'd suggest going to see your GP before the op and see what they say. They may be able to provide a note in advance or they may want you to go in a few days after the op. My surgeon said a week to 10 days to fully recover so it I’m not sure what the woman who did your pre-op was thinking. I’ve also had a sick note for a week and had to go back to get another one for another week so if you need more time to recover I’m sure that will be possible.
