Diagnostic Laproscopy with potential treatment.. Recovery time?

Hi. I'm booked for a diagnostic Laproscopy with treatment on 29/01/18 and was hoping someone can advise me what to expect? I've had an appendicectomy in August 2016. My gyno recommended the surgery to diagnose chronic pelvic pain I've had for well over a year now, which seems to be slowly getting worse, I'm on painkillers everyday for it. Its worse when I excersise more. & after sex. Potential treatment is for endo or pelvic adhesions, nothing found on ultrasound apart from small follicles consistent with pcos.

Help?? Can you tell me what to expect RE: recovery time? I've advised work up to two weeks off on the advice of the pre op nurse??

TIA! Xx

Hi, I’ve had two diagnostic laps. On both occasions I went back to work after a week. However I think some women do need two weeks. A lot depends on whether it is strictly diagnostic or whether they ask for your consent to do some treatment too.

Did you have any treatment?

They've already said they are expecting to treat so ive told them they can do the treatment. I'm hoping they do to be honest I'll be devestated if they say they couldn't find anything x

I didn’t have any treatment, hence back at work in a week. If they might treat, then I don’t think it’s easy to predict how long it will take you to recover.

Hi

I am 3 weeks post op and had treatment too. My doc signed me off work until 22nd! Still uncomfortable with bruising, so guessing the inside is just settling! I am feeling more normal now, just a bit tired!

I was told everyone heals differently don't put yourself under pressure or copy others listen to your body!

Take care x

What treatment did you have? (If you don't mind me asking of course!) 😊

Thank you! Was it for endo? Did you know you had it before the surgery? X

Yes it was. I didn’t, my GP had suggested, the more I read the more I thought it was. The gynaecologist when I saw him I took along a diary of symptoms said it could be, but only way to really find out was laparoscopy - so here I am. Bad afternoon/evening with discomfort!

Hope all goes well for you! Make sure you have lots of loose clothing! My jeans are still to uncomfortable to wear when I sit down! And night dresses were the best for hospital:) x

Did you stay overnight? Its meant to be a day surgery admission for me but I think if I have treatment I'll end up staying I was really poorly after my previous lap for my appendix removal. Xx

Yes I was the same, was supposed to be in and back out! But I fainted three times, my bp was very low, I had to beg to get Home the second day! Was glad to get home and have a proper sleep!

I will be four weeks Monday and I still get tiredness coming over me! It’s the healing inside, don’t worry about others, think of yourself! Good luck x

Thank you xx

Hi so sorry you have been suffering and hope you get a firm diagnosis so you know what's going on. I think recovery time really depends on what they find and if it is endometriosis the extent of the disease. With daily pain you quickly lose your energy and fitness and get exhausted so you need to be kind to yourself after your op and gradually regain your strength back again. Most importantly you need to heal from surgery. Tissue and muscle take time to heal and each person's body is different so if you feel you are not ready after two weeks, stay home and get plenty of rest. X

Thank you, I just can't get out of my head that because some women are able to go back to work quickly after surgery, I'm going to be like judged for not being able to do that? If that makes sense? Its driving me crazy! My appendicectomy at least was emergency surgery so I didn't get chance to over think like this :-/

I know exactly what you mean. It might be a keyhole procedure but it's still a major operation internally especially if undergoing major excision surgery - ignore what anyone else may think and take good care of yourself. Do not feel pressurised into going back early and when you do decide to go back take things gently. It can take months to heal internally.

Thank you, I think I really needed to hear this xx

I had an exploratory lap done and they found a lot of endo, so they removed as much as they could while they were in there. It took two weeks for the pain to subside, and another week until my fatigue leveled off. So three weeks total until I was feeling like myself again.

How are you feeling now? Is there any follow up for after the surgery? Xx

in reply to Jess98790

I had an initial follow up 1 week post op. I’m meant to go back for another follow up next month, but I’m going to cancel it because there’s nothing to talk about.

The first three months post op I really regretted having the surgery because my periods were 100x worse, I was in pain every month during ovulation and my period, when I hadn’t been in pain before the op. But it truly was just the fact that my body was still healing. Now, I’m 7 months post op and feel great. Those 3 months post op were like post op blues.

Hi, I had my lap on the 27th December. I am still off work recovering. I think i underestimated the surgery tbh. I really thought after a few days I'd be good to go but no. I had endometriosis in 3 places and it was all burnt off. Going into week 3 I still have muscles pain and when I walk around I get dull achey cramp pains. I think it's more the fatigue holding me back now rather than pain.

Give yourself at least 3 weeks and if u can get back to work before then that's great.
