Sharp pain during period

Does anyone else get like a sharp sudden pain in either the left side of right side during their period.

It’s quite random at times and painful that it causes me to stop what I’m doing until it passes

It’s always on my right side and I’ve been hospitalised before as they thought my appendix had burst, luckily it hadn’t but the pains horrendous when it does happen, it get it when I don’t have my period as well though 😩 x

Do you know what it is? I thought it might be my ovary but god knows c

They haven’t been able to tell me what it was exactly, but a junior doctor mentioned it was most likely ovulation pain after I had ultrasounds and xrays and pelvic swabs x

It was during my period though x

Not sure then hun, could be ovarian cysts maybe or could just be your pelvic floor contracting with the period pain, or just general inflammation, have you had your ultrasounds yet? x

Yes unfortunatley ive had it for 26 years always in left hand side so bad that i couldnt move whilst i was on period and sometimes not just on period.

Got worse over last two years so had every test goin and the lap and it showed nothing at all, im totally healthy apart from they noticed i clotted terribley during period as was on at time of lap.

I was perscribed transexamic acid which has helped me massively. With pain and bleeding.

Plus instead of a 9-11 day bleed i now have a 3 day bleed. Pain wise nothing that a couple painkillers wont help and some ibuprofen.

I hope this helps. I think it just where one side works more or ovulates more efficient or gets more inflammed.

This is pretty much my main endo symptoms each month, except it’s both sides for me. I ended up on the floor at work the first time! My ovaries are adhered to my uterus so suspect that could be why. Waiting on gyno referral to confirm. Are you on pain meds? Mefenamic acid dulls the pains a bit for me, but will be adding codeine to this next time.

I’ve tried mefenamic acid, codeine and nothing helps the period pains or the sharp pain at all.

I’m at the hospital next week to see another gynae as I haven’t been diagnosed yet but endo is suspected by my doctor

What were other symptoms you had, if you don’t mind me asking?

Ack. Hopefully they will be able to give you more info and much better pain relief. I find it so frustrating and tiring not knowing when the sharp pains might hit during the days it attacks X

I get it bad during ovulation but I had it during my period as well this month so it’s confusing and annoying x

I have the sharp stabbing pains, I find no pain meds can touch these, they pass pretty quickly for me though so its a couple of minutes of 'scream and grit teeth' and breathe through the end of it then it's back to the lower stomach constant cramps. I even had a tattoo of a scorpion and where its sting is shows exactly the point of the stabbing pain so it was easier to show the doctors!!

Love it! I can grit my teeth during the day, it’s the waking me up randomly at night that gets me. I miss sleep.

I have like a dull ache in my lower stomach in like day 3 onwards of my period but get random sharp pains around my ovaries. And other pains like when I go toilet etc (sorry for tmi)

I used to get a sharp sudden pain one side every month but it was mid cycle so think it was Mittelschmerz ovulation pains. The only thing that stopped the pains was going on the pill. The pain was so bad I couldn’t walk at all, I had to be driven home from work by my boss once and a couple of other times got taken to A&E with suspected appendicitis! This was before they worked out what it was. The pain felt like a knife but also burning too.

One of my daughters has the same type of pain but it is just a few days before her period (not mid-cycle) and the doctor thinks it might be endometriosis so she’s been referred to a gynaecologist but I’ve been told it is unlikely that they will investigate further as she’s only 14.

However, I’ve read that the earlier endo is diagnosed the better due to potential fertility issues, yet all the doctors seem to want to do is put a sticky plaster over the problem by prescribing the pill.

So basically... give the pill to a 13 year old to masque the symptoms instead of investigating the cause (this is probably a financial saving to nhs) but in 10 years time when she may well be having fertility problems how much would the IVF cost the nhs?? (Maybe ivf won’t even be available on the NHS in 10 years time!)

Sorry for a ranting a bit, it just frustrates me.

Don’t worry about it, the nhs frustrates me at times. I’ve been trying to get a diagnosis for 7 months and all this period stuff is affecting my career as an athlete. Worse part is I’m at the hospital a few days before Christmas 🙄

I’m only 18 but I’ve tried 2 types of pill and both didn’t work. Strong painkillers like codeine and that had no affect on my cramps. The fertility side of things does freak me out a little but nothing I can do until I get a diagnosis

If you have tried 2 different types of pill and you still get the pains maybe it is not connected with your ovulation, just a thought. The pill stops you from ovulating so if you are still getting the pains when you are taking the pill you need to keep going back to your gp to ask them to refer you for more tests. Don’t give up.

I noticed in one of your other posts you mentioned gluten intolerance (by coincidence I have recently been diagnosed with coeliac disease) I’ll try and find your other post again to comment there x

Hey, I get this too.

It's like a sharp tugging feeling in my right side? What other symptoms do you get?

I would push to see a gyno and talk to them about endometriosis. X

I’m seeing another gynae on Thursday. Idk if it’s endo or not.

I have very painful period cramps, lots of clots but medium flow, painful sex, lower back pain, painful bowel movements sometimes. Dull ache in my lower stomach constantly and the sharp shooting pain during my period and ovulation xx
