Getting out and about after laparoscopy

Hi, I'm due to have a diagnostic laparoscopy just before Christmas. I have had booked some theatre tickets for months as a 'thing to look forward to after surgery', but now my surgery date has been moved to the day before! I know I will have to take it easy, but do you think I'd be able to manage a couple of hours sitting in a theatre or do I scrap/sell my tickets? I have had major neck surgery and recovered pretty easily but I don't want to overdo it...

Apologies for such a trivial question 😳

Hi there, I have just joined the forum. I have had 2 laparoscopies and subsequent laser surgery for endometriosis. As I was treated both times my recovery was around a week, but i went out after a few days. I guess it depends on what they find and what surgery they need to do (which will they decide there and then) but if all is well and it's just the keyhole to recover from...you may well be ok for the following day. Although I imagine still a little sore. Hope that is helpful and best of luck with your procedure. C xx

Hi, sorry if it's not the answer is you are hoping for but from my experience I would say maybe not to go to the theatre the day after surgery. I had a rough time with the surgery in July and it took about a week before I could go out for a couple of hours and longer before I could really do anything. I really hope your laparoscopy goes well and you recover quickly! Best of luck

I second this opinion. I had a lap early August and another last week and I was totally not up to do anything except lay in bed and rest.

Me too. Maybe it depends to some extent how much effort it will be to get to the theatre?

Hi

I really differs from person to person. Physically I was able to go out the next day, a bit sore and tired but nothing major. Mentally it took me 3 weeks to act normal, I am still not great even tough it’s been 3 months. But I got my diagnosis after the laparoscopy and they said the only way is ivf, so that is the reason of my mental state. My body was fine. Even no pain in my chest, no dizziness, just paracetamol every now and then.

It’s not really answering your question, sorry. I would probably keep the tickets if I were you ...

Hi,

Everyone's experience will be different and how well you recover from surgery will also depend. My experience wasn't straight forward as I didn't come round very well after my lap and my body went into shock so I ended up staying in hospital overnight. It will also depend on what you have done. I went in for suspected endo and came out with the removal of a 6cm cyst on my ovary! I think it would be a oush for you to go to the theatre but only you know your body best and what you can and cant tolerate. If you do decide to go i hope you have a great time. All the best for your surgery xx

Hey,

I agree with everyone, it all depends on the individual as we may heal differently and also depends on how much they do once you’re in surgery. My personal advice would be that the day after is not great for any plans other than bed rest. I do hope you recover quickly.

Side note- for my recovery, 3 weeks later and I’m still extremely exhausted quite quickly (very annoying).

Good luck! 🙂

Hi, I probably would give the theatre a miss base on my own experience. I was still pretty sore and full of gas the next day. Also, sitting down was pretty uncomfortable and I couldn’t walk very much.

I wish you all the best with your laparoscopy xxx

It takes 24 hours alone for the GA to leave your system. Never mind if you have a minor complications effects eg sleepy bladder or a minor infection. I was kept in overnight with bladder issues and didn't get home till the following afternoon.

I was weak and wobbly as a kitten for several days and even standing up and showering made me feel faint and dizzy during the first week. If it were me I'd err on the side of caution, plan to sell the tickets and rest.

It all depends on how you feel, sorry that’s not very helpful, the day after I felt fine but there was no way I could’ve done anything else but sit on the sofa because I had major issues with my bladder, it was actually two days after when all the drugs wore off that i really felt like I’d be hit by a truck! You’ll just have to play it by ear but don’t push yourself it could end up making you a lot worse in the long run, personally I wouldn’t, but everyone acts differently to surgery, your recovery could be a lot worse if they do find endometriosis and remove it as you’d be under for longer and would be having endometrial ablation done on top of them just having a peek inside, good luck with your lap though, I wish you all the best x

I had mine on Monday and there’s no way I would have wanted to go and sit in a theatre the day after! I was in too much pain - yesterday (Friday) was the first day I could sit up properly without being in bad pain, but like others have said everybody is different and I did have endo removed. Hope it goes well for you xx

Thanks to you all, after much consideration I have decided to return the tickets and plan something for next year instead.

I've been waiting nearly 10 years to get to this point with doctor after doctor contradicting each other or trying various pills instead. I guess the theatre can wait a while! On the plus side I had a good excuse to not work over Christmas - my first one off since I started working! Every cloud...

Thanks again for the advice :)
