Went for my pre-op and been left so confused...

So I've never had a lap and I'm quite new to all this. Got a couple of questions and just wanted to hear your experiences because I've been left feeling confused after my pre-op...doing it with the NHS btw.

I'm on the Microgynon contraceptive pill and was told at my pre-op that I can continue taking it as normal as long as I take it the evening before my op. I find this so weird, because I had a different operation last year at a private clinic (not endo related) and was told to stop taking my pill 4 weeks before the operation due to an increased risk of blood clots. Don't know what to believe...of course it'd be ideal to carry on taking my pill throughout, but I could have sworn it's really dangerous with the anaesthetic...has anyone else been told this?

Another thing that I find odd is that I won't be speaking to a consultant about my procedure until the very day of my op. Is this common practice?

And last but not least, how long did any of you have to wait after your pre op until the date of your op? Really hoping it's sooner rather than later as I'm in my final year of uni and don't want to fall behind.

Thank you to anyone who replies! Just feeling very nervous rn.

Hi hun.

Can't comment on pill but if your unsure for your stated reasons question them.

Also it is common practice to not see consultant till the day it was for me anyway.

My pre op was a week before my op

I think it can take up to 6 month for an op once you've had pre op don't quote me on that I think most are sooner rather than later.

Good luck

Hope you find the answers you need

Hello, I can't answer the first question as I've never been on the pill while having operations. Regarding the 2nd question, it's very common not to see your consultant till the day of surgery and last but not least, pre-op assessments cover you for up to 6 months of waiting.

I waited 3 months from pre op too actual op.

This way on your pre op you get too ask all these questions.

I'm on thyroid meds & was advised too just continue taking them. ( they're hormone replacement like your contraceptive pill.)

Also you've gotta think people have hormone injections and could fitted & still have surgery so if it's unsafe they will not operate hun.

Believe me. They are very thorough in understanding what your meds are and how it Interacts so won't risk surgery if ANY risk is involved.

They would postpone surgery first.

Call up your pre op number ask for a nurse or see your GP.

I Asked them email my anthesiologist too make sure my meds were ok.

Hope that's helped xxxxx

Hi there,

When I got my surgery date letter it said about stopping taking combined contraceptives at least 4 weeks before surgery.

I called because my op was within 4 weeks, and I was told to stop taking it if I was only on it as a contraceptive and not on it for health reasons.

I met my consultant at my gyno meeting.

My pre op was 2 weeks 2 days before op. I knew both of these dates in advance because my booking got lost and I had to call to get dates.

Maybe you can call and double check about the pill.

Good luck x

I took the pill prior to surgery the NICE guidelines are to advise patients to consider stopping 4 weeks any oestrogen-containing contraceptive prior to surgery to reduce the risk of DVT. However this is only usually given as a requirement if you have other factors and is based also on length of surgery (think it's for anything over 90 mins expected under general) and how long they expect you to be not moving around for after surgery (anything more than 3 days) along with various other things, so I would follow their advise. You'll likely get compression stockings on the day though

Yes standard not to speak to consultant after initial referral for surgery until the day it happens

From pre op to surgery you'll usually have your date within 12 weeks

I took my pill right up until the night before my op. I was getting the coil fitted during my lap so I had asked at my pre-op if this meant I had to stop taking the pill at all in case it had any impact and was told that would be fine.

I had my pre-op Just less than one week before my lap, but I did receive both dates at the same time so I’m not sure if it’ll be different for those who get their lap date given to them at the pre-op.

I can’t really comment on the consultant part; my original lap date with the consultant I had seen got cancelled and they squeezed me in with a different consultant who I have still never met.

Try not to worry too much, they wouldn’t let you do anything that was dangerous x

Think it depends when they have free slots I had my op the day after my pre op due to space and how much pain I was in. Good luck
