Terrified of a G.A two fears

Ive two phobias or should i say one phobia and one great fear.

I'm 40 but I've never had a general anaesthetic. I once had nitrous oxide when I had my teeth out when I was 12 and it was a horrendous upsetting experience. Please tell me it's not similar. I had awful 'dreams ' during that.

Also I have emetophobia and this also scares me as I don't want to vomit.

Can anyone help here at all ? Thank you

You have absolutely no dreams what so ever! It's like someone turning off a light switch one minute you're there the next minute you're back! No time lost or anything! And if you have emetiphobia ask for antisickness drugs to be administered before and after your GA xx

I was honesty so scared about having general anaesthetic as I have never had it either but honestly when everyone used to say to me 'it's the best sleep' I never believed them! Until I had mine and honestly was! Before you know it your awake, no dreams nothing just felt like a nice deep sleep. There really is nothing to worry about I can assure you!! They talk to you before she told me to think of something nice before I could even think about something nice I was gone x

Hi,

I was really frightened before my lap and I also hate being sick! However, I honestly woke up feeling like I had the nicest sleep ever and didn't feel sick at all, just slightly uncomfortable from the Gas, but that passes really quickly too! I know everyone says it but it won't be as bad as u think and will be over before you know it.

I completely sympathise, I was terrified of having a general anaesthetic before my lap. But everyone here is right - it honestly is fine! I woke up and thought nothing had happened, I had no idea they'd done the whole operation. You'll feel drowsy afterwards and I just kept wanting to sleep but it really is just like going for a nap. Except you don't dream! Xxx

I have emetephobia too!!!!!! I’m expecting my lap sometime but no idea when - nhs lol. I’m just guna ask for anti emetics. I’m more scared of hearing everyone else be sick. I know I can somewhat prevent myself but hearing others will make me panic more

You won't hear anyone else I'm sure, I certainly didn't after my lap. Not everyone on the ward I was on was in post lap recovery anyway as I went on to the general gynae ward after leaving the post - op room (which is a private room).

Like otherwise have said you'll be fine! I've had 5 general anathesthics to date, I vomitted a lot with my first two so I now always ask for anti-sickness to be administered at the same time and that works really well, I've never vomitted after surgery since but have felt a tiny bit nauseas after the last one.

I wish I felt like I had a deep sleep like others, I always feel so groggy and absolutely shattered but that feeling wears off over a day or two. You won't dream at all, they will probably count you down from 10, you'll feel nothing happening at first but by the time you get down to 8 you'll feel drunk and you probably won't get as far a 6! The anaesthetists are really good in my experience, one asked who my fave alcoholic dream was and then pretend to make it. Tell them your concerns and they will really reassure you. You'll wake up and it will be like no time has passed whatsoever, it's not even like you've been asleep, almost like time has stopped. I suffer with sleep paralysis and awful nightmares so had the same fear as you, you'll be fine x
