Lap & Hysteroscopy tomorrow

Hello Ladies

I hope you are all as well as can be.

I'm panicking about my laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy tomorrow. I had stage 4 diagnosed end of November 2015 during laparotomy, followed by 2 failed IVF cycles.

I'm now under a specialist affiliated with bsge hospital in Edinburgh : a recent mri showed very extensive disease which was affecting ureters /kidney, and I subsequently had two stents inserted.

We noted we were still trying to conceive and the specialist is aware of this, and will try to conserve fertility. I'm just so worried though that they'll go in tomorrow and decide it's too severe and I need it all taken out. I've kept a lid on it all since diagnosis but can see me having some sort of panic attack tomorrow. My Dad us taking me to the hospital, I want to stay calm and not worry him but I'm really starting to freak out. Has anyone been in a similar position? Thank you X X X X

Hi there

My understanding is that you'd have to specifically consent to anything that would significantly impact your fertility (hystectomy and/or ovary removal).

Having said that you will have the opportunity to talk to your surgeon before your op. Make sure you have an open and honest conversation with them (have it written down if it helps) and discuss the consent form with them and what it means and what would happen should your case be found to be severe, so that you're both clear on what your expectations of the operation are and the consent form reflects that.

Best of luck for tomorrow - try not to panic, but ask your questions you need to.

Gx

Thanks very much Gwen, this is really helpful - feeling a bit better this morning after a decent sleep., fingers crossed everything will be fine today X X X X

I've had a hyst + BSO at a bsge centre and they made me consent about 5 times before the surgery, and went through it all and made sure I consented again on the day of the surgery.

Surgeons cannot just decide you need a hysterectomy while you are under and perform one without your consent. The only reason why more drastic surgery might be carried out without consent would be if you had bleeding that they could not control and your life was at risk, and that's very unlikely.

Please tell the consultant when you see him before the surgery that you are worried about this so that they are aware. It will all be OK. x.

Thank you so much Ladies. I made it, better than expected too - right side is looking good, left side covered in adhesions and fallopian tube will be removed at next op. But doctor was positive. I'm a bit groggy but will send a better update soon, thank you so much for your reassurances in the meantime! All the best X X X X
