Recovery from Total Abdominal Hysterectomy Due to Endo

Hello, I had a total abdominal hysterectomy (retaining ovaries) 15 days ago and was very surprised to be discharged the day after my op with no pain relief. I called my GP the day after discharge and he prescribed pain relief of which I am now not having to rely on quite so much. At first I was really struggling with the pain and difficulty in moving but each day improving and pain getting so much less but I am incredibly frustrated by the slow recovery process, which I realise is 'normal'! I wondered how other ladies in my situation are coping?

It's very surprising you were discharged without pain relief. On the two occasions I've had excision surgery I was given dihydrocodeine to take home with me.

15 days after a surgery like yours it would be very normal to be still taking things very easy and getting lots of rest. Try not to rush yourself xxx

It took me months to recover. I'm 4 months post-op and was shocked that I'm still not completely healed. I had not understood the process of creating a vaginal cuff. Im still realizing that removing whole organs from the body is very traumatic and can't be rushed. No matter how hard you try.

TAH is major surgery and you've had a core muscle removed! It will take at least 6 to 8 weeks to be up to even doing a few "normal" things like cook or make tea or even have a bath! I had three months off work after mine and I then had problems to took another 2 years to feel I was recovering. So take it easy and don't be so hard on yourself.

Take a look at the hysterectomy associations website as lots of useful info and ladies to chat to. Also a recovery plan that will show you just how long things can take to heal.

Good luck.

I had a laparoscopic hyst 5 weeks ago and second what everyone else has said - this is major, major surgery and sadly the recovery takes a long time. I am just about able to walk my youngest to school now but I'm very tired and still sleeping during the day, and not really able to do much in terms of housework. It is really boring and frustrating :/
