Hi

I believe that there could possibly be a link, I've done a lot of reading and research that suggests there may be.

I have an underactive thyroid and also endometriosis so have both. I known for a long time that my hormones have been out of sync and many of my health problems seen to be interlinked. Its all part of my endocrine system and a never ending battle!

Me too, Hashimoto's and endo. Iodine helps, but had to be done carefully.

Hi, I think they are linked, once you have one auto immune disorder you are more likely to get another.

I have endometriosis and an underactive thyroid, it was overactive before treatment.

I have met two consultants that are convinced they are linked but also two more that are not so sure. They don't always like to talk about a link. Recently I had a hysterectomy and endometriosis removal, I joined a site for ladies with recent hysterectomies and a large number of them had endometriosis and thyroid disorders too. I feel like it is too many to be a coincidence.

They most certainly seem to be linked but I'm thinking is it more thyroid that is rejated or all kinds of auto immune

And which came first

Infertility is often caused by throid problems

Also the blood tests don't pick it u a lot of times

Then what ?

I also have hives on my legs coming and going

A friend just told me her daughter has thyroid and she had rashes to

I wonder if thyroid is corrected if it could help ward off endo

I would be interested in hearing if anyone has or knows which came first

Thank you for your reply

Are the hives on your knees? Have you had them checked out?

Shelly92 profile image
Shelly92 in reply to Allyson1

My hives are on my thighs

Especially one

And they cover the whole thigh

I had blood allergy tests

Nada

And I have had them checked they don't know

It's not dermatitis herpetiformis, is it?

Shelly92 profile image
Shelly92 in reply to Allyson1

I never heard of dermatitis herpetofoemis

Allyson1 profile image
Allyson1 in reply to Shelly92

It's an autoimmune skin rash that occurs in a percentage of people with celiac disease. It's diagnosed by biopsy. It often clusters around joints but not always. Confirmation of DH pretty much points to a celiac diagnosis as well.

It might be worth looking into, since autoimmune diseases cluster and all that.

I couldn't be 100% sure but I think my endometriosis came first, although my thyroid problems were diagnosed first. I am 37, I had symptoms of endometriosis from the age of 13 and was diagnosed with overactive thyroid in my mid twenties. I am sure both disorders effect people differently but even when my thyroid was as settled as possible with very few symptoms my endometriosis got progressively worse and worse.

I was infertile by the age of 30 I couldn't say for definite if it was my thyroid causing it or endometriosis at that time as hadn't had laparoscopy but by the time I was 36 it was definitely my endometriosis making me infertile, my tubes were blocked, everything inside was damaged and scarred. I did have 2 children in my early 20s but I tried for years and never managed to have any more. I did have fertility blood tests but they all came back fine, it was only having laparoscopy when things became clear.

Funny you say about rashes and hives, I get a lot of both. I am allergic to almost every cosmetic, and bath product and lots of medicines. Over the last couple of years I have also become allergic to peanuts and other nuts, shellfish (which might not be recent I've never eaten it) and bananas. The allergy consultant thinks this could be linked to my auto immune problems.

I think you will find some Drs think things are linked and some don't, they treat them all completely separately. It is hard as there things can effect us all so differently.

Yes agreed. I think theyre linked. Something to do with estrogen levels.

I have both. Underactive & stage 4 xx

How bizarre .... I'm just about to go the dtrs and ask them to test my thyroid. I am now 41-diagnosed with endo at 24. Had total hysterectomy and literally just had another laparoscopy 2 years later and they removed widespread endo and major adhesions. I've been experiencing painful headaches, extreme tiredness but also a really weird lump in the front of my throat which feels like I've got something stuck all the time.

It all sounds like it may be possible!!

Shelly92 profile image
Shelly92 in reply to SHAZZAPIE

So sorry for your pain

It's horrendous when a young girl has to have that drastic of surgery

What did it grow on?

Surrounding tissues ?

And they did not see any at time of surgery at 24 ?

Were you on replacement hormones

Again

So sorry

I read all these stories and I know I'm lucky I had one baby and at 60 no pain at all I have not had organs removed .

I've had other doctors say

" wow you went through all of that and managed to keep all your organs ?"

Yes but I really fought hard

When I was put in low dose Prozac for depression I noticed a lot of pain stopped

Same thing happened to my daughter

Now most doctors do not recommend organs removed as as you know it does not always fix things

Just noticed your comment re Prozac and pain improving. I have endo and underactive thyroid and have in the last 6 months been taking Prozac and now Sertraline as Prozac stopped working, I have anxiety feelings although not consciously feeling anxious about anything!!!! My pain has improved too is this a known link??

Shelly92 profile image
Shelly92 in reply to Bubble10

I first heard of it when my daughters doctors told her .

I had been taking Prozac before I heard that

When I looked at I realized I had less pain even though it was for depression .

Coincidence?

Don't know her docs did say it was a new study theory type thing .

That was 20 years .

They said

We don't know why but studies are showing a very low dose of Prozac can help with that pain.

It makes sense in a weird wacky way

Neurotransmitters are involved in pain

I suppose it the drug taken could be a road block to some neurotransmitters I get that

Pain comes from the brain.

That's why drugs are used for pain to stop the brain from telling the body it is in pain

Does that kinda make sense ?

Or I'm just crazy Lol

What you experienced when Prozac stopped working is called

Prozac poop out

As in all things we take after a period of time our bodies readjust and the meds seem not to work

It does not mean your condition is worse as many doctors would have you believe

And then it's

Oh your worse lets

Up dosage

Change meds

And my personal favorite

Lets add some more drugs to the ones you are taking .

I hope people do not fall for that

Doctors do not like to admit those kinds of drugs develop a toleranc

The reason they don't want to say or believe that is because it sounds to close to

Dare I say it

ADDICTION

They are not addicting in the classic sense of the word

You do not need to keep taking to get same high

No it's much scarier

All the drugs anti depressants and all do give you withdrawal symptoms

I tell you the truth

They will not admit that

If you say it happened to you or another they want to make you believe that you are wrong

ALL of them are hard to get off

Whether or not the dr admits

I was on a support group about this and I can tell you across the board it was happening

And that docs take the above mentions approach

Personally I feel like slapping the snot out of doctors that say that

I would also like to force feed them the drugs

Pull them off

Uh how do ya feel now doc?

What? What's that you say?

You feel awful you know that's not possible

I know a lot about that subject

If Prozac was working a low dose and it stopped

I would not let them push another on you

What you can do is take a break from Prozac then go back

You can also take drug holidays

Where you don't take every day

I'm sorry I went on so

It's a pet peeve of mine

Like I said they better have a real good damn reason for giving you more pdrugs

Shelly92 profile image
Shelly92 in reply to Bubble10

Coming off those drugs can make you feel anxious for a bit

It's a withdraw symptom that docs say don't exist

I would still try stopping them and in a few months go back to Prozac

It might just work .

If anything has worked for you then stick with it

Hope this explains or helps a bit

Thanks Shelly

Very interesting I withdrew of Prozac and after a week on nothing but thyroid meds started sertraline anxiety feelings had gone but now back after a few weeks and feel so tired and achey with sore throats hoping it's just a virus !!!

Shelly92 profile image
Shelly92 in reply to Bubble10

Stopping Prozac can do things like

Cause anxiety

Nausea

Body aches and pains

Shelly92 profile image
Shelly92 in reply to SHAZZAPIE

Have you been checked for esophagus issues

That is a real give away when your throat feels like that

They had to dialate mine

Worth looking into my friend

My doctor said it is linked, but it's still all up in the air... no one knows for definite xx

My cousin and I are also both hypothyroid and have endometriosis. There are various websites saying there is a link between endo and thyroid problems. It is certainly worth getting your thyroid checked out if you have endo.

Shelly92 profile image

So sad I hope my granddaughter does not get it

My daughter is battling weight but tests are normal for thyroid

But I've heard that the blood tests for that do not necessarily mean you don't have those issues

So I don't know

Were you able to resolve your thyroid issues ?

Also

I know all of it is ammune issues

Is that the only reason they are related

I am in severe depression

Have been for years

Meds don't help

A dr suggested thyroid meds for it

But I'm not sure

Seems like anything immune related can go together

Doctors are so slow at finding stuff

I hate when you have tests done and waiting for results how they just take their time

Clearly they need to get real sick or a close family member real sick for them to get that waiting is cruel

I've been waiting for brain scan results

They had them last week but dr has not had time to look

It pisses me off

My husband has even been calling he's worried about it

They say if you don't hear right away it's good news

But my shoulder has torn cuff in three places and same dr did not get back to me

I had to keep tracking it down and finally a NP told me results

I will switch doctors

If anything comes up in future I want a more compassionate dr and staff

So thanks

You know it does seem likely endo could be in females at birth

With families getting it

I'm thinking maybe there are a few different types of endo not just stages but different species of it

What do you think

Yes, I am sure there is a primary causal link between these often co-occurring conditions. I was diagnosed with Hashimotos & secondary hypothyroidism whilst in hospital for surgical investigations into Endometriosis. I was diagnosed with Stage IV Endometriosis & extensive Adenomyosis & a 7cm uterine fibroid sitting across my fundus 3 years later. Now I'm facing a rapid deterioration in kidney functioming - to stage 3 CKD in less than 6 months - which is either auto-immune or due to extent of Endo. I have just had my 13th Prostap injection in attempt to manage non-surgically temporarily. I'm 46 & using 'add-back' bio-identical hormones (Estradiol gel, Testogel & Progesterone vaginalike pessaries), as well as having yearly bone density scans & taking Actonel Combi (D3 & Calcium).. & I take Vit C 1000mg timed-release, Selenium, high strength B-complex, high strength multi vitamin, high strength omega 3, ferrous sulphate 600mg, Curcumin tablets & Magnesium. Stress is by far the worst trigger / exacerbate for me. I cannot cope with any. My system seems to shut right down & I can barely get out I'd bed, never mind get to work. I don't know how much longer I'm going to be able hold down a full time job for. Consultant Gunae surgeon has referred me to Nephrology & Endocrinology. I'm wondering whether I should be being referred to Immunologist???

You are moving in the right direction with supplements

I just posted aboit leaky gut

When I just read your post it came to me that that may be something for you to think about

They say all starts in gut

And if you have to many bad germs and yeast your gut will

Not absorb all the supplements

Oregano oil is good for those bacteria

Hard as hell to get down it burns so much

They do have it in pill firm

Would not hurt to try right

I hope you get better

You just have to

This is to much

You go through so much and it seems it won't be longer you'll go through more .

Since you are doing supplenye

Look into yeast and gut bacteria or pro biopics

Oregano oil is great probiotic

I think the real related for sure link is endo, thyroid, allergies , ms, lupus arthritis

They are all immune system issues

So it may not be that thyroid per say is the real link but a sub category of links .

Hi Shelly

Not sure how common it is to have both conditions but both myself and my sister have under active thyroid and endometriosis. As they both have links to hormones doesn't seem to much of a stretch to imagine there must be a link ?! Hoping you are in a good phase and feeling well.
