Belly button incision

Hi,

My belly button incision keeps weeping clear fluid. Is this normal? I saw a dr at the hospital and he didn't seem too concerned, but the fluid had dried by then and was just crusty. Ever since I've got home from hospital today it's just weeped. I keep cleaning it out with some boiled water using cotton buds.

I had exactly the same after both my Laparoscopies. The last one I had in January was weeping for about 2 weeks and was on/off bleeding too.

Cleaned with cotton buds and warm water twice a day and if I noticed it was a bit inflamed I would use cotton buds and salt water and then rinse with the hot water bud as well.

I wouldn't clean it out much more than twice a day though as you may agitate it - keep it covered with a dressing for the first few days.

Hope it gets better :)

Thankyou, yeah i'm 11 days post op now, i was admitted to the hospital 2 days ago with some serious abdominal pain so i got them to look at it then, but they didn't seem too bothered. I'm home now but I will give the salt water a go xx

I was convinced mine was infected last time especially as it was on/off bleeding and constantly weeping for what felt like a lot longer than the first. I was still finding it 'crusty' as if it was still weeping until my stitches fell out.

I definitely wouldn't use the salt water more than twice a day - say in the morning and then again in the evening though.

If it doesn't get any better in the next few days, or if it gets any worse, I'd go to the GP though :)

I had this so got given antibiotics and now it is all clear and looking fine. The doctor said mine was infected. Is it smelly? That's how I knew Mine wasn't right

I don't think it's smelly lol i have antibiotics for a UTI so hopefully if it is infected, those antibiotics will help that too xx

I have heard it's normal even if it has a pinkish tint to it. It's just the stuff being pushed out. If it isn't scabbing up in a day or 2, then go and get antibiotics because then there is something preventing it from healing up.

I already have antibiotics for a UTI. so maybe that'll sort it out if it is infected xx

Possibly. But sometimes they give an ointment to clear it up locally. I never cleaned mine because for me it just makes it worse.

Hiya Bernie. I've got the exact same going on right now, had my laparoscopy 2 weeks ago. Maybe see how you go for the next couple of days but I would definitely get it checked by your GP and get them to take a swab. If it is infected then the antibiotics for the UTI won't really help clear it up, it's a different antibiotic you need, so my GP said anyway! Hope that helps and hope you're feeling okay :) x
