Do you need a period? Ttc

After finishing on prostap last week I was wondering.. Do you have to have a period to get pregnant? This may sound a stupid question but I've been looking online and think asking you lovely ladies is best! X

Hi DaisyL, I think you do need a period because you need to shed the extra uterine layer (which is what your period is) so that the layer can build up again to the correct thickness to allow the fertilized egg to attach and implant. Not only that, you need the oestrogen surge which happens after your period to release the egg from your ovary in the first place as well as the release of follicles stimulating hormone and leutinizing hormone. Us women's bodies are delicately fine tuned for procreation, without completion of one step you can't go onto the next unfortunately.

It's so confusing isn't it. I find doctors, consultants even websites all differ which Is why I thought it best to ask on here! Thank you x

A friend of mine has PSO and doesn't have periods. However, she fell pregnant so is possible.

you ovulate mid cycle and get pregnant then (14 days before periods starts) so no you don't need a period before you can get pregnant. but the chances without a regular cycle are less. After any hormone therapy your body will need time to get back into its natural rhythm. however the first time you release an egg you could get pregnant without even having a period. hope this helps. Im a nurse/midwife.

Hi DaisyL, having struggled with infertility myself for the last 7 years, I would start trying straight away. I wish we had tried again soon after I had had my son (who was conceived naturally by the way). Hindsight is a wonderful thing !!! By the time I was diagnosed, endo was at a severe stage and has left me infertile.

Thank you. Once I am not in pain and able to have sex I guess we will be trying straiht away as I'm not on the pill now. I appreciate your advice we want a family so much. Nice to hear you do have a lovely little boy x
