Ovarian cyst & IVF

Hi there was diagnosed a few weeks ago with another endo cyst on my left ovary about 6cm in size after having trouble with side pain and sickness mainly at night. I have just started on suprecur injections as part of my Ivf and am just a bit concerned that this cyst with start to interfere with the Ivf. The Ivf clinic have said it is only usually a problem if the cyst is producing its own esterogen but I'm not convinced given the pain and sickness I'm getting. Has anyone had any similar experience?

I had a 5 cm endometrioma on my left ovary when I started my 2nd IVF cycle (ICSI) back in 2010 and in hindsight I wished I had abandoned that cycle until it had either naturally burst or was surgically removed. One Dr at the clinic said it was fine but when another Dr attended to me during a scan to check the size of my follicles, he couldn't see any on my left ovary due to the size of the endometrioma and as such told me they would not be able to collect any of the eggs if there were any. He said that if he was made aware of this before I started my injections he would have suggested that I waited until I was clear of the endometrioma. The injections were making it larger and therefore, when it came to egg collection they couldn't collect anything from my left ovary as they couldn't get access or see how many follicles there were. However, they did collect eggs from my right ovary and implanted 2 embryos. I was so relieved but 2 weeks later when I did a pregnancy test it was showing a very feint positive pregnancy test. I called the clinic and they told me to wait another day or two and do another test. I never ended up doing another test because that night I was rushed into hospital in absolute agony with OHSS as my left ovary which was covered by the endometrioma was overstimulated by the injections causing me to produce many follicles. The hospital explained that the overstimulation caused the feint pregnancy test. I then started to bleed and the pain just got worse. This was July 2010. The clinic then referred me to an Endo specialist to deal with the endometrioma before I embarked on IVF again. I was referred for an MRI by the specialist and was waiting for the results. By September 2010 I had lost a lot of weight. I was 8 and half stone and went down to 7 stone. I had lost my appetite and kept vomiting. I went to my GP after developing a severe fever and his results showed me that I had a urine infection and gave me antibiotics. The antibiotics seemed to work but after 2 weeks, I woke up one Saturday morning in absolute agony and I wasn't even due my period. I felt so bloated but my stomach by then was concaved due to my weight loss. My husband called an ambulance and by the time they arrived I was in and out of consciousness due to the severe pain. I was also vomiting non stop. To cut a long story short, I had an abscess in my abdomen as a result of the egg collection which was exacerbated by the endometrioma and the OHSS. The Drs at the hospital said that if I wasn't fit and healthy I wouldn't be here today. Luckily the hospital had my MRI results and picked it up and knew straightaway what was wrong with me. I had to have an emergency laparotomy and I was in theatre for nearly 4 hours where they drained a litre of fluid from the abscess. I was told I was close to suffering septicimia. I was in hospital for two weeks and I went down to 6 stone in weight. 4 years on, whilst I still suffer from stage 4 endometriosis but do not have any cysts, I am on the long protocol for my 3rd cycle of IVF. I had my first prostap injection last Monday and hope to start my stimulating injections in the New Year. Here's hoping that 2015 is the year for me.

My advice would be after what I have been through I would get a second opinion. My current IVF Dr has advised me that if I had a cyst she wouldn't start the IVF process.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write about your personal experience. It has definitely given me the push to question things more. I have an appointment in 10 days with the dr so will discuss it then before I proceed any further with the Ivf. Good luck with your treatment and I hope the Ivf is a success this time round for you xx if you get chance it would be lovely to hear how you get on x
