Gabapentin trial

Hi Im due to go into Aberdeen hospital in a few weeks for a lap and they have asked me to be part of a trial for 6 months to take Gabapentin. I just wondered if anyone has taken this drug as Im a bit worried that if I say yes it might have side effects. I don't want to make things worse than they are. However if it improves things that would be a great bonus.

Hi mumblemac!

I definitely recommend gabapentin. Out of all the painkillers I tried while waiting for surgery (including morphine), gaba was the only one that gave me any relief. There were no bad side effects. It may have actually been the safest medication I was taking. My mind stayed clear, I didnt get terrible breakthrough pain, and I could actually function again. Though everyone reacts differently to drugs, I'd say its at least worth a shot.

Hi

I was put on Pregabalin (Gabapentin) as a last resort for my pain. I can't say that it didn't help the pain. It took the edge off and my quality of life improved. However, I did suffer with side effects. I put on 2 stone of weight in 2 months, which affected my mental state. Being in a constant state of pain had not been a good place for me emotionally so the weight only aided to take away from my self esteem. I also had headaches, nausea and vomiting. I was on the drug for 3 years until I finally decided that living in a constant state of being under-the-weather was not worth it. I have been Gabapemtin free since January and whilst I am not looking forward to the return of the pain, I am feeling better than I have in years. The hood has been lifted and I generally feel well most days.

It's hard to say that you'll fare better or worst but quality of life is the most important thing for me which means I go for the option that gives me the best quality of life for that period of time. Things changs so I may need to return to the drug at some point, but I hope not. Some of my family members, who know more about medical drugs than I do, have warned me against the dangers of this drug, so I am suitably aware that it's not all roses.

Good luck and I hope you find something that helps you to have the best quality of life possible.
