Hi, I have been diagnosec with "Dry Eye" and I am being treated with "Thealoz Duo" , this soothes my eye but recently I have had very sore swollen eyes which have been diagnosed over the telephone and I have been given "Chloramphenicol Antibiotic" (0.5% w/v) Eye Drops , they do not cause a problem but they do not appear to be easing the problem either. Has anyone got any suggestions as to what may be the cause or any suggestions what may ease it ?

I have a dry eye condition following cataract operations but it can happen as we get older. I have seen treatments offered privately but not investigated and they are not without risk. I was advised to use lubricant eye drops. You can get them without prescription. The brand I use is Hyco San.
I have had dry eyes for years and they require constant care - there are no short cuts. My eyes occasionally get infected and when that happens I have antibiotic ointment/tablets and take the whole course. This is my regular care routine:
At bedtime using warm boiled water, dissolve 1/2 tsp salt in 1/2 pint of the boiled cooled water to create a saline wash, then using a clean eye pad, bathe along the base of each eyelash, where it attaches to the lid, several times. Next I use a lubricating eye gel (Carbomer) which helps during the night. In the morning I clean my eyes with water then use Systane ultra UD lubricant eye drops (the ones in preservative free individual vials) from Boots, 4 times a day. Finally if it’s hay fever time or I’m near other allergens (e.g. Cats!) I use Opticrom anti histamine eye drops. I really hope you get this sorted out as it’s so uncomfortable- best of luck
Thank you for that , I have some prescription medication from Doctor at the moment (which helps but not much) I will finish the course and if still having problems I will try your suggestion , I will let you know when and how I get on . Once again thanks
No problem, I strongly suggest getting a specialist to look at your eyes to try to find the cause. GPs often just deal with symptoms and it’s terrible to suffer. You have to insist the GP can’t refuse you if they do you have to report then. You health is most important. I hope you follow through and find the solution. Good luck & take care

A couple of years ago I was getting a very watery eye, just one eye. I researched on the net and discovered it could be because the tear duct is blocked meaning tears can't be produced. I went to see the doctor and asked her to send me to a specialist, which she did. I went to Western Eye Hospital and indeed they found the tear duct was blocked, so they syringed it, it's not pleasant and I had to go for a second visit as even though it worked at first it closed up after a couple of months. The second time was successful and I no longer have the problem. My eye doesn't water anymore especially in cold windy weather. I don't know if you have explored this as a possible cause but I suggest you ask your doctor to send you to the eye hospital to check your ducts to see if they are blocked. A temporary relief is also to but a hot water flannel on your eye for 5 mins or so, it should be as hot as you can bear hold it there for at least 5 mins then removed and gently massage under your eye where the lower eye lashes are this dissolves any oil that may be clogged there. I hope this is of help.
