Are my symptoms due to an allergy?

I wonder if anyone can help identify my symptoms?

I have had these symptoms for 7 months now. It began with a very itchy and sore back of mouth and throat. It was so irritating, kept trying to use my tongue to itch the roof of my mouth and clear my throat. I have also had itchy inner ears. Especially the left hand side of my throat and ear. The back of my throat is inflamed and red and my tongue is slightly swollen. At times, I have not been able to sleep or work and have been in tears with this unbearable sensation.

I was initially given treatment for oral thrush, the swabs came back negative and treatment did not work. I then was treated for a throat infection, again a weeks worth of antibiotics did nothing. I was given steroid nasal spray and antihistamines. This has helped slightly and eased symptoms and made it manageable. However, still unhappy that the Dr hadn’t found the cause of this, I asked for him to look into it further.

I had bloods taken and it came back that I have a B12 deficiency. I was given 6 booster injections of B12 over 3 weeks to quickly top me up. I am aware that a b12 and iron deficiency can cause oral irritations, however I feel my symptoms are not entirely fitting with these. Also, the symptoms have not improved since having the B12 booster injections. The bloods also came back to say I have had glandular fever at some point in the past, but not sure when. Not sure if this is relevant?

I was referred this week to the ENT Allergy clinic where I had a skin prick test and came back with no allergic reactions. The ENT specialist looked in my mouth and said that it looks imflammed but he cannot pin point the cause of this. He has prescribed gaviscon advance to see if that works, and told me to stop all other medication. He said about acid or silent reflux. I wonder if anyone else has similar symptoms as mine and can help me pinpoint what’s causing it? I am confused why the nasal spray and antihistamines worked if it’s not an allergy?

I have had gaviscon advance for 3 days now and has helped a little but still feeling irritated and especially itchy back of throat, left ear. It stings my throat a bit when I take it, is this normal? How long should I take it for? Can anyone please shed light on this?

I would be so grateful of any ideas/advice/personal experiences people may of had because I feel it is taking over my life. Thank you!

One of my adult daughters gets similar symptoms from low folate levels.

Was folate tested. ?

She also gets acid reflux. Has changed her diet which has helped this. She doesnt take an anti acid now.

As a sign of low b12 too you need to conti ue with b12 treatment.

I've often got itchy inner ears that get very sore. If you press the side of your face which I've done in an attempt to relieve pressure .can feel like razor blades. Gp has looked and said they are fine?? Akso had no explanation for my ears popping alot especially post headache.

Hope you get some answers

Thank you for your kind reply. I am not sure if my folate levels were tested, I will ask my doctor. Please could you tell me what dietary changes she made? I would be interested to know so that I can try it. Yes I have the same issue when I do the same to my ears! It all seems connected.

Thanks so much again!

She took months using fodmap.

I think individual

I know little and often helps. Not eating too close to lying down.

Acidic drink with meal. Lemon or lime cider vinegar.

Probiiotics can help.

All very involved.

Could be that you have a strep throat and need to be on antibiotics for a longer period, you could check with doc to find out if the swabs already taken were checked for this, my strep showed up with a yellowish hue on the top /back of throat. I did get some of your symptoms as well.

Yes I have very similar symptoms. I put mine down to a mixture of an allergy and reflux as it is worse at certain times spring and autumn.

I have found taking antihistamine cetrizine cures it and also vitamin d 10 micro grams a day helps

I also think that I get acid reflux too and this made it worse as it would go up my throat.

The acid reflux is much worse if you eat close to bedtime I try not to eat after supper time in the evening. Do not lie down after a meal this makes acid come up.

and do not have peppermint tea with a meal as this makes the stomach sphincter relax and makes acid come up.

Hope this helps if the antihistamine helped you before I am suspicious that is allergy related. The tests are very poor anyway if you look on the web.

You can get cetrizine on the counter called pititeze in the uk. Obviously check with your doctor that’s ok but remind him that antihistamines helped before.

If it doesn’t help you can stop it again. It may take a week or more if your thrust is really sore to help.
