Hayfever: Drops, Tablets or Nasal Sprays?

Hi,

After a pretty bad attack of asthma & hayfever I've been advised by the clinic to get some antihistamines (loratadine). What's the better delivery method? Drops, Tablets or Nasal Sprays?

Thank you.

Every antihistamine tablets has side effect therefore please do read the documentation!.

I use eye drops, nasal spray only in the morning and one Zertik table a day, I have been doing this for 35 years.

NHS do not do prescription for Zertik therefore I buy it on line.

Thanks Sandy. I've just got back from the shops. Boots do the tabs at £3.99 for 14. Lidl do the same tabs for 89p for 14. What a difference!

Hiya, I’ve had bad hayfever my whole life. I find a combination the most effective. I take a Benadryl tablet, Beconase nasal spray and Opticrom sodium cromoglycate eye drops in the morning. If it’s really bad you can repeat dose early evening as well. Although in this particularly high pollen count season we’re currently going through I still get a few light symptoms like itchy nose. You can buy all these over the counter at a pharmacy, cheaper than prescription.

i used to take tablets, still do every now and then but ive noticed Nasal Spray works best for me and deals with more of my symptoms, feel like is has an effect quicker too than tabs. the only side effect i notice is a runny nose after using the spray but that's normal as you are spraying liquid up your nose

I have been taking antihistamine tablets, nasal spray and eye drops since 1979.

It all depend on how I use it, I only take one tablet in the evening because of work and driving. Nasal spray and eye drops only in the morning. Working in the garden is fine but in an office environment, training rooms, because of felt tip pens smell, cleaner trolley and other example perfume! Now days it all depends on what I eat as well, fruits and uncooked veg, my nose will run and itching eyes.

Also I cant be in the kitchen when carrots or parsnip is pealed, what is in the air will give cough and runny nose. during this hot temperature, moving from room to room as the temperature vary, it gives me sneezing and runny nose. I am due for allergy shot treatment in October this year!!

I am not sure if I want to go for it because of the side effects I red here.

I think you should go for it, seeing as you are a long time sufferer & compared to what I say most people do, you have an extensive amount of triggers

Hi all,

About 6 months ago I started having hives that progressively worsened with no apparent pattern. I saw an allergist and had skin and blood tests done. They revealed many food sensitivities but no serious food allergies and the environmental skin test was all positive to varying degrees with the serious reactions to dust mites. I started allergy shots which were going good for several months. Then, on my second set of shots for the week, I had a reaction 15 minutes later. The only symptoms I had were lightheaded/faint followed by increased HR which was determined to be low BP. I had NO hives, swelling, nausea or respiratory problems. I was given epi and sent home alone 40 minutes later.

Unfortunately I’ve had “episodes” since then of light headedness and heart palpitations. If I’m able to check my BP it’s on the low side but not dangerously low. I’ve had my tryptase checked a week after my allergy shot incident and it was normal. I’ve seen other doctors and had tests done that ruled out many other causes for this so I’m left with panic attacks or continued allergy issues as the culprit. It’s been 7 weeks since the incident and I still have episodes about once a week. The only commonalities are that I’m alone, usually driving, and I was anxious in the couple hours leading up to it. Question is, how do I know I’m having “just” panic attacks or if this is allergy related since I don’t have any of the other symptoms of an allergic reaction (hives, swelling, trouble breathing, etc)?

I need to investigate this reaction further!
