Self care tips for migraines

bethsunflowerfield profile image

Hi, I’ve recently starting suffering from migraines. This is because I’ve recently been diagnosed with TMJ dysfunction and trigeminal neuralgia, which triggers the migraines.

I have a doctors appointment this week but I’m looking for some self care tips. I can’t afford anything like acupuncture or CBD oil but could afford something a bit cheaper if needed.

Someone recommended I have a cup of coffee when I have a migraine, and this does help a little.

I’ve suffered from four migraines in the last week.

Also does anyone get a fever when they have a migraine?

I sometimes suffer from migraines with aura too, where my right eye becomes blurry and cloudy. But this doesn’t happen all the time.

I went to see a oral and maxiliofacial consultant who advised I try wearing a mouth splint at night, which I got from my dentist and now I wear every night, this has improved my jaw hugely and the pain in the sides of my ears and head. Still working on the front of face and head pressure but glad I have huge improvements since using the mouth splint.

Hi. I have TMJD and like Gillian I've also got a night guard from my dentist to help ease my jaw pain and problems. It's early days with it yet, and if it fails to help me my dentist has suggested I be referred to the maxillofacial department.

I also suffer with headaches and migraines in varying degrees. I've avoided all caffeine for several years as instructed by neurologist. I take B vitamins regularly. I still suffer with differing pain, nausea, and when its very bad it comes with aura. But I dont think they're as bad as they use to be- or I've just got use to them?- I know some of the triggers now and can spot the early signs and know when to bail out and rest. Other times though they come on out of the blue and all I can do is retreat to my dark room. Blackout curtains have helped me wake up better in my own time in the morning without the crushing head feeling and eye ache caused by the sun and brightness.

CBD oil is expensive but might be worth the investment?, I've heard good things about it and I'm looking into it myself. Holland & Barret do one at £15. It's % isn't high but might be a good way to trial it?

Good luck and best wishes xx

I'm guessing you aren't on Imitrex or another Rx.

Caffeine tablets taken along with ibuprofen and Vitamin B2 tablets (or just extra Vit B2 offers relief to some), Extra Vit B1 helps with nerve pain, pressure point massage, rolling massager that is kept in freezer (from Amazon.... love this thing... it works and it's not expensive), eye mask (freezer), an herbal migraine blend, heating pad, pillow filled with styrofoam beads that is soft, but will conform to the shape of neck/ head, smelling lavender and lemon essential oils, Frankincense and Myrrh or Patchouli incense, Wild Lettuce or California Poppy tincture for relaxation/pain. But, sometimes only a dark room will do.

Hope you find something that helps.😊

This might seem stupid but;

A bag of frozen ice peas whatever in the back of your neck with your head down and your hands and feet in warm/hot water at the same time and close your eyes or;

Three pillows under your bum legs up on the wall (like when people try get pregnant) these are some home remedies I’ve found help some alongside painkillers x

I find a cold gel eye mask helps when I have migraines. Mine only cost £8 from body shop and is cleanable and reuseable. I've also found that if I catch it early enough a weighted blanket/heavy layers and quiet white noise helps to ground me to the present rather than focussing on the pain - it doesn't stop the migraine but it does make it less painful.

Hope you find some answers that help you x
