I asked the same question and was told that a line is only used as a last resort if your veins are not good enough in your arms or they have to dialyse you before your fistula is made or matured.

Neck lines I understand can be the source of infections so it is better to have a fistula.

My Mum has a perm cath in her chest and although a fistula is preferred, the Doctors have said that the decision is ultimately the patient's own choice. This was put in when she collapsed because of total renal failure. The Consultants tried to persuade her to go the fistula route saying that they carry less risk but she refused to have the fistula. Her Consultant has recorded her refusal to have a fistula in her medical records so that she will not be pressured into having one. She has just recently had to have that line changed ( the first one lasted two and a half years). Hope this helps you to make your own decision.

I have recently had my done in fistula in my arm (elbow joint) which is now mature. Though some times you can really see it (enlarged) particularly when I am hot it is not too bad, it now goes up my arm but you can only feel it there and not see it. If you can have it put in your elbow joint, the only issue that may arise is if you fall asleep with your arm closed, you then wake up with pins and needles but this is normal and soon goes. Good luck

Not all fistulas look the same. If your worried about your appearance more than your health, maybe you need to do a bit of thinking?

You are more likely to end up in hospital with infections if you have a neckline, than if you have a good fistula.

Good luck:)
