Good news for Gout

I have some good news to report. My situation is that I have high readings of uric acid. This is apparently par for the course with CKD, and the frequency is regular attacks. Usually if I don't catch it in it's early phases, it turns into a real painful situation and I wind up in the hospital, needing an injection of a steroid.

In the last few days I began to feel the onset of a gout attack, this time in the middle of my foot, and it was starting to restrict my ability to walk. I was taking cocchizine regularly during the day, but that didn't seem to stop it. It was clear this was going to keep gonig until it became critical.

I looked up how to stop a gout attack FAST and found the recommendation of lemon juice and baking soda. I got some water and squeezed lemon in it; I took two half teaspoons of baking soda. When I took the baking soda I felt something immediate. Today my food feels good. Still have a residue of swelling but no doubt this anecdote worked.

That remedy is news to me. I don't have gout but my late husband did and he was miserable.

I use Apple Cider Vinegar with Mother for my gout & that has eased the flares but I'd not heard of that before so thanks for the heads up!

My father had problems very similar to yours. His doctors simply gave him a long term prescription for Prednisone. If he felt it was starting to happen, he would do a 4 or 5 day course, and it always worked.

Check with you doctor about the baking soda. I use Tart Cherry supplements and also alkaline water....seems to help with gout flair ups.

Certainly easier and probably safer for CKD patients to manage with a long term prescribed steroid. Baking soda is a base and can lead to AKI vinegar is an acid and lead to metabolic acidosis. As a one time sufferer of both that is NOT the road I’d recommend. Remember before anything new goes done the gullet as you primary care nephrologist or better yet a Renal dietitian. You want to preserve your remaining kidney function not destroy it. Ask a doc before any type of supplementation, medication or home remedy because now you risk your total health. Just an fyi I have suffered from gout since 2003, I had it in nearly every joint of my body elbows, shoulders, knees, ankles fingers etc. i had the tophi the large Utica acid deposits under the skin. I found a rheumatologist who solved it for me and it was wonderful but please seek medical professional advice. This is just my experience by the way and I wish you the best!
