CKD and Corona virus

Any advice, I work in Ambulance service,(not frontline) have CKD, and just 1 kidney, can't see GP or get through to 111 for advice. Am I more at risk from corona virus?? Thanks in advance.

Kaz, as another someone with just a sole kidney and CKD, I consider that does put us more at risk. If, for instance, we were unlucky enough to contract Covid-19, we would be at risk from the top two possible side effects: pneumonia and kidney failure.

Stay safe and do whatever it takes to protect yourself.

I too have only 1 kidney. My kidney doctor explained to me the following: While I am technically considered as having CKD, that is only because my Creatinine level is higher than average. BUT that is really considered a normal reading for a person with 1 kidney (trying to filter as if it were 2). That there really is no disease in the kidney. So should I be careful (of virus)? She said just like any other person. We should all be 100% careful. Out chances of catching the virus are the same as any person with 2 kidneys, with ckd, without ckd. IF we get it there really no special protections or actions that can be taken just because of our kidney condition, other than those we normally should be practicing anyway, especially staying hydrated.

Hi Kaz. I share your concerns. I transplanted 5 years ago after failure. It’s a concern but it increasingly looks as though it would be really tough to stay away from this given our profession, operational or not. I am a paramedic of 31 years. Use the gov website to search out the best options for you as they are advising social distancing for us yet key workers are a little under pressure I feel. Get in contact with your renal clinic and see what they suggest also. Whatever you do please stay safe 👍🏻

Thanks so much for getting back to me, but I'm not under any consultant at the moment, although I have spoken to a sister at a local renal unit, whom advised me to be very careful until such time I can see my GP.

Phone GP practice the receptionist will tell the duty doctor of your condition they will phone you back and hopefully resolve your issue. Take care.

HI Kaz.

Thank you for EMS service. Our local EMS director has been sending out notifications everyday on precautions and how and when and what to wear for PPE. We are also testing everyone now twice a day for temp. Anyone with over 100.04 goes home for 24 hours. We also have no public coming in to the base. Follow your sanitations guidelines, where your N95 mask or whatever you use and wash you hands as much as you can.

I checked with my GP I have CKD stage 3 and asthma she told me to self isolate I am also almost 66. Be best if you could check with your own GP even just ask them to phone you. Stay safe Kaz x

Hi kaz, hope you are well. I do have 2 kidneys, but they are only functioning at 30 percent.

I sometimes wonder whether they are doing split shifts?

The deterioration has been caused I am told by taking prescribed medicine for 30 years.

I too used to work for the nhS , MIND, and NSF , and have spent many years self employed.

Now retired and living on state pension.

There is so much advice and information going around, that, for myself, I plan to self manage and keep an open mind.

Self manage, with support I mean, if I am honest! And I do get a tiny pension from the nhs , which comes in very handy sometimes!

My understanding is yes, you are but you need to know what your function is like to be sure. If you have had a blood test it is likely you would have had renal function tested so your GP should be able to confirm. If you have reduced renal function you should have been invited for annual flu jabs in which case you are automatically in the vulnerable group. Good luck, stay safe and Thankyou for the work you do.
