Always feeling cold and CKD

Any thoughts on this? Always cold esp. feet and hands. Stage 3a.

Yes, also feel cold . I am at stage 3b and have anemia, likely from CKD.

Recommend you ask your Doctor about your symptoms, as it could be caused by other than Chronic Kidney Disease or related to it. My Doctor diagnosed it as kidney disease related and is monitoring it. We are not allowed to diagnose on this forum, only share information and support one another on this Kidney Disease journey.

There is much that can be done to slow down the progression of Chronic Kidney Disease. My Doctor put me on a CKD diet based on blood work results. I am still at 3b after 4 years. At this point nothing has been prescribed for the anemia.

My diet is just low cholesterol but fail abysmally

You are probably anemic. I had the same issue until I got it under control. Now I have hot flashes from Menopause instead. Good grief there always has to be something lol

Have you lost much weight? Last year I was freezing all of the time and in the year previous had lost about 20 lbs. I've gained some weight back and the freezing went away.

Do you have odeama? I had odeama up to my knees/thighs. The only places I can keep warm are 1) my bed 2) my car with heater on and 3) any places with air condition on with warm air flowing into the room.

Imagine the water in your body acts as water bottle, the warm air in your bed/car warms up the water in your body. When that stops i.e. you get out of bed or car, the water in your body starts to cool (your body temperature is not enough to keep it warm) hence you shiver.

I hope I have explained clearly? That's my theory and doctors may agree or disagree?

I am on dialysis (started two months ago) and therefore all water have been taken out of my body and I do not shiver anymore.

That’s quite interesting as i am often cold and generally my body seems to run at a cooler temperature...36.4...not that I hardly take my temperature,but on the occasional times I have,then it’s a bit lower. I just figured maybe that’s why I’m always cold?

Like the others say,it could be anaemia but best to ask your doctor!

Hi runningjohanna! I know that I have also had the cold thing happen to me many times (still do from time to time), and when I looked it up online, it did state that CKD can cause shivering. It didn’t really explain why though. Wish I knew more. It may be what deaframbo mentioned. Really not sure. Your nephrologist may be able to explain it. Quite frankly, I’ve never asked any of my doctors. Would be great to know! Lol! God bless. 😊👍

I am 3a/3b (changes back and forth). I have the same condition and my arms get very cold. Doctor says it is low level anemia. NOT from CKD but from medications I take for my cancer.

Can tamoxifen make you shivery? I’ve been on it for nearly 10 years. Nearly done!

I did a search on side effects of Tamoxifen. One of the side effects listed is chills.

Interesting!! Maybe it’s been the tamoxifen all along?..... no deffo got worse in last 6 months. Maybe I’m just getting old and whooshed. Good to know I’m not alone xxx

I get this as well! I never thought of it being due to my CKD as I am quite slim. But I would also be interested if anyone else gets this as I am always cold especially hand and feet

I suffer badly from the cold and just lately my toes get so cold and painful not sure why. Am stage 3a.

Hi, yes I am always feeling cold even during summer months from when I was first diagnosed from 3a and now in late stage 4. Feeling cold and get terrible crap in both legs at night which is really quite painful.

Glad to find other people get cramps and cold, never related it to my kidneys. To be honest I have now invested in an electric blanket that is warmer at the bottom than the bottom. What a difference, no cold feet and no cramps, pure pleasure in feeling warm.

I think it is yes. I have been having cramps for over 3 years. Consultant prescribed Quinine Sulfate tablets which takes the edge off them but doesn’t stop them.

Interesting, I have CKD Stage 3 but cant say that I am particularly cold in areas but do suffer from cramp a lot but my Doctor could not prescribe Quinine because it is harmful to kidneys

I have never felt pain like it when it happens if I’m honest. The muscle goes so hard from just under the back of the knees and shoots down to the toes and I can’t move my legs or feet for what seems like ages but is probably only 5 or 10 minutes

That really sounds horrid. I did try drinking tonic water which helped.
