Protein in urine

Hi I was wondering if anyone can help. I’ve recently had high levels of protein show up in my urine but my kidney blood function tests were fine. UTI and kidney infections have been ruled out. I’m currently waiting for an ultrasound scan. Can anyone help with what this might be?

Hello and welcome Lisa. I can appreciate that you are anxious at this time but may I urge you to be carful if you try and research this yourself online as search engines can be a good source of information but not when it is about personal medical health.

The best person to ask is your health professional as they know your medical history and will be able to give you the best information based on their professional expertise.

Can you make an appointment to see your Doctor? writing down the questions that are bothering you so that they can answer them. Perhaps taking someone with you, as being anxious you may not remember every thing that was talked about.

I hope you will keep in touch with us and let us know how you are getting on.

Best wishes,

MAS Nurse & Moderator.

My 45 year old son has had large amounts of protein loss in his urine for over 20 years and all his other kidney tests always show up to be normal. He only has one kidney because of having the other removed as a baby because of a benign tumor. For years the doctors said he was most likely losing protein because the other kidney grew larger and the filters were bigger, so that made more protein come out. Recently though, we have learned that his thyroid is giving him problems and this could be causing the protein loss.

His first sign was lots of bubbles in the toilet after going. We didn’t know for years that meant protein loss. From what I read, if you are losing protein, you can also be losing hormones too. My son has always been more tired than most his age throughout his life.

I had some of those signs and it ended up I had a sizable stone. I also ignored..not sure how to put it, but like vaginal flutters. But you are on a great start having ultrasound. Keep pushing for answers. Great luck!!

I’ve been getting some discomfort in the groin area now and again and did wonder about stones but I’ve read they are excruciatingly painful. Did you get any severe pain or just the fluttering you describe?

Hi. It was pretty odd. My gfr numbers had been going down, so doctor sent me for ultrasound. In the report it said no stone, but a kidney wasn’t draining properly. I felt discomfort down low when they did the scan. I was set to go see kidney doctor about a week after scan. In the next 2 days I had pain that was awful. It ends up I had a stone in ureter, kidney doctor thought it had been in there wreaking havoc and damaging the kidney since my gfr numbers declined. He scheduled outpatient surgery, had stone confirmed through CAT scan. The stone was 6 and 1/2 mm and they said I would be in awful pain if it passed. Well went to surgery, stone had passed and we didn’t know that, but it gave Doctor chance to determine left kidney badly damaged. He put in a stint which helped it drain better, but those can’t stay in. I don’t have the pain or flutters I described. If you take anything, only Tylenol. Pain killers, other things are so hard on kidneys.

Ok thanks for your response. I’m having an ultrasound this afternoon so will hopefully get more answers then.

The nephrologist told my son that frothy urine means he’s losing protein. You need to have that checked.

It’s absolutely normal - as are my blood results so it’s all really strange. I can’t understand why there’s so much protein showing in my urine results but everything else seems ok (I had 2 tests one of which was sent to the hospital lab). I also have some discomfort in my side but not what I would describe as pain.

Kidney stones only have time to form and crystalize if you are not drinking enough water . You have to stay well hydrated to flush your kidneys. Water is life and is the best way to put it.

Hi Lisa,How much your irine ACR lab test reads?

Does your nephrologist predcribed any meducation for that?

I have urine ACR 75 and all other kidney functions are well, no UTI, no kidney infection, I am on Telmisartan 20mg OD, previously was 40mg OD caused hypotension but I am not sure because of interaction with grapefruit or the dose was high.
