Fluctuations in Creatinine and Urea

I had 2/3's of my thyroid removed in June. At the time my Creatinine, Urea and Bloods where all fine (100, 6.4, Hb 135). Since the operation my TSH increased from .6 to 4.5, my Creatinine went to 160 then back to 130 within a few weeks, my Urea increased to 11.8 and now it's back to 6.5, my Hb went from 10.6 to 11.8. I did the 24 hour urine test and that was fine with the 160 Creatinine, but now my ACR is 50 (30 being the normal limit) with the lower 130 Creatinine.

All a bit strange and random. My GP sent me off to see a nephrologist who was a little concerned about the ACR. Had a bunch more tests, I have chased him for a few weeks but he hasn't come back to me. Have started meds for the thyroid.

Anyone had similar. Should I be getting my affairs in order. 50 YO male, 105 kilos, exercise a lot not much body fat.

Need to add during the period of higher readings my blood pressure had spiked to 170/105. Work stress, sodium, booze. Now it's 125/75.

Hello Kiddingnee and welcome as I see this is your first post with us.

I am sure some of the other lovely members will answer you and reassure you. The fact that your blood pressure has returned to within normal limits and the Consultant hasn't contacted you urgently is a good sign. Perhaps making an appointment with your GP to discuss all the concerns you have would be an excellent idea. Go with your questions written down so that you don't forget anything you wish to ask them.

Keep posting on this caring forum and let us know how you are getting on. A happy and brighter New Year to you.

What was your creatinine, urea, and urine protien ACR before you had your thyroid parially removed? I’m talking in the months, year, 2 years prior? Right now (beyond my understanding), your TSH is kicking up a storm - probably because thur thyroid is underactive and your body is trying to activate it. It won’t. But taking thyroid meds will do the trick.

I’d need to know more of the story to respond more coherently. If your GP was to worry about anything, it would be the high blood pressure during those 6 months. A spike in BP could have given you a heart attack or stroke with those numbers. Anyway, they are really good now.

Any other info? This sounds a lot more complicated than you describe.

Thanks for the response.

My Creatinine was 85 and Urea 5.5 6 months before my thyroid op.

Blood count fine.

If I remember correctly the metric numbers for creatinine and Urea/Bun put those values in the normal range. Not sure what is going on with your thyroid and why its affecting metabolic values in this manner.

I assume you saw a surgeon for the thyroid surgery. Can he/she shed some light on your subject? I wonder why your GP is testing you every way imaginable and referring you to a nephrologist?

I’m no expert but hopefully you will find that thyroxine really helps on all fronts. When your thyroid is badly out of whack this takes a toll on many aspects of our health I’ve found. For instance I developed rheumatoid arthritis when my thyroid was inadequately treated but once my dosage was increased again by an endocrinologist my joints improved and I haven’t struggled with them again since.

This hasn’t influenced my kidney function for the better or lowered my BP though but then I’m overweight and have other long-standing autoimmune diseases.

It may take a while before you feel the full benefit of thyroxine but hopefully you will.

The Creatinine is 1.4 (non metric) but yes Urea has dropped by nearly 50% into normal range, however I believe this is impacted by hydration.

The Thyroid surgeon basically said "take the Thyroxine and see how it goes".

24 hour protein was fine October but the nephrologist gave me an ACR test a month later and its was slightly above normal (5. Above 3, normal range with 30 being the high end)

It's all quite complex (of course). The steep TSH increase may have had an impact in that it has interplay with ADH which helps regular water retention and general pressure on organs ala a diuretic effect. So maybe that may be a cause of abnormal readings. The ABR increase in drugs to control my BP spike (Candasatan 16mg to 32m) may have increased my creatinie levels. The lower and fluctuating Hb levels (13.5 to 11.2 back to 11.8)......who knows...,

I started taking Thyroxine 4 weeks ago. So will be interesting to see if there are many changes.

Thanks guys
