GFR all over the place.

GFR all over the place. I'm 67, mostly stage 3. For several years my GFR always went back and forth between 42 and 43. It was not great, but it was stable. Then, a month ago, it was suddenly 56.2. I hadn't changed ANYTHING that should affect it. Now it's 45. I still have changed nothing. No changes in food, medicine, exercise, stress, other tests, etc. My doctor blows it off, saying it's better than 42 or 43, so why worry? But the instability worries me. And going from 56.2 to 45 in less than four weeks worries me, that it could keep falling. Has anybody had their GFR start acting crazy for no apparent reason? If so, how did you get it stabilized? Thanks.

Hi there, EGFR naturally fluctuates and can be affected by many things. It could be a simple thing like hydration. Over the past 10 years mine has been 49, 53, 60 and more and it's gone both up and down in short periods. I think the doctors look for a consistent trend rather than a one off reading, so I wouldn't worry about this.

This is encouraging.

So I gather, now, which is a relief. 😉

I too have had similar experience with eGFR.

I'm so glad to hear this is fairly normal. I will sleep better tonight. Thanks.

Thanks for telling me that. I didn't know that happened. I had just kind of assumed that it was a fight against what would otherwise be a slow but steady decline, and felt very fortunate that I seemed to be managing myself in a holding pattern.. I'm glad to hear that going through a period where it's fluctuating quite a bit is not unusual. That also makes me feel better about my PCP's general competence in the area of CKD. And I'm very careful about hydration but it's always good to remind people about that, whether their kidneys are healthy or not.
