Lisonopril and CKD

Hi everyone I have been diagnosed with CKD recently and my GFR dropped down to 54. Apparently it was 60 a year ago but I wasnt even informed about. It looks like a steady decline over years. Im 61 and have a high blood pressure and have been taking Lisonpril 20mg for about 10 years. Now my GP suggested it could be actually the Lisonpril which causing kidney damage and suggested changing medication to Amlodipine. Any views on that? I cant find any info on this new medication but lots of not very good reviews regarding Lisonopril which apparently can cause kidney failure.

Thank you for any feedback!

Thank you for the info. For many years, my cardiologist has prescribed Lisinopril for my high blood pressure. A few months ago, the cardiologist's assistant prescribed Amlopidine in addition. My kidney doctor said to cut the Amlopidine in half. I am going to check with some additional reliable resources to see what I should be doing.

Hi Jaykay and thank you for your reply. This is very confusing and lots of contradictory info about lisonpril. It has been prescribed to patients with CKD but no high blood pressure to protect kidneys but can also cause renal failure..

hi Frankie. Ive been taking 10mg of lisonpril and 25 mg of Hydrochlorothazide for years. Doctor said to cut the hydrochlorothazide in half. didnt say any thing about the lisonpril. since I have heart disease, he wants me to keep taking the medicine.

Hi Captainlsu and thank you for your reply. I think I stick with Lisinopril for now as it does lower my blood pressure and I dont really get any side effects I know of ( the only one which I was concerned was GFR decline but it could be another reason for it)

I read that hydrochlorothazide so called water pills are diuretics and can affect how the kidneys regulate water in the body, which can lead to worsening kidney function and abnormal electrolytes.

All the best!

I read the same thing about all the medicines in the thazide catogory. but since I have some heart problems, don't have too much of a choice. my blood sugar has actually been a lot better since i've been off metformin, but also eating a lot more good fruits and good veggies. lot of blue berries and strawberries. I live in the country and just bought 2 gallons of blue berries from a guy for 20 bucks. tasted so much better than from the store.

Hello!,

Have you ever talked to your doctor about Losartan? Losartan is used to slow long-term kidney damage in people with type 2 diabetes who also have high blood pressure. I stopped using Losinapril because of it's side effects which is dry cough.

Thank you!yes we discussed different options with my doctor. He actually says that lisinonpril is proved to protect kidneys and because it controls my high blood pressure well he suggested not to make any changes for now.

Best wishes!
