WELCOME. NONIE. I THINK WE WERE ALL FRIGHTENED, BUT IT GETS EASIER. I'M AN 85 YEAR OLD FEMALE DIAGNOSED A YEAR AGO; CKD 3. MY NUMBER HAS REMAINED THE SAME SINCE THEN. I AM WIDOWED, AND WAS LIVING ALONE UNTIL RECENTLY WHEN I MOVED TO AN INDEPENDENT LIVING FACILITY. NEITHER OF MY SONS NOR MY DAUGHTER LIVE CLOSE BY, BUT ARE SUPPORTIVE. I FOUND IT HELPFUL TO BUY A FEW CKD DIET BOOKS ONLINE AND HAVE ONE CONSULTATION WITH A RENAL NUTRTIONIST WHO MET WITH ME IN MY NEPHROLOGIST'S OFFICE. THE GOOD OR BAD NEWS, DEPENDING ON HOW YOU VIEW IT, IS THAT FROM WHAT I'VE READ, NEITHER OF US IS LIKELY TO BE RECOMMENDED FOR A TRANSPLANT, BECAUSE KIDNEYS ARE USUALLY GIVEN TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE LONGER LIFE EXPECTENCIES, AND STUDIES SHOW THAT DIALYSIS IS OF MINIMAL BENEFIT TO PEOPLE OVER 65. MY NEPHROLOGIST ORDERS BLOOD TESTS EVERY THREE MONTHS. MY CARDIOLOGIST HASN'T BEEN ABLE TO LOWER MY BLOOD PRESSURE AS MUCH AS SHE WOULD LIKE. IN GENERAL, I FUNCTION LIKE SOMEONE IN THEIR LATE 70S. LET'S HEAR MORE FROM YOU.

At my husbands diaysis centre there are many many over 65s & they do well my husbands friend is 70 this year & has been dialysing 6 years he still walks the dog, gardens, decorates etc! & another chap is 92 also you can have a transplant if someone offers one another patient who was 76 had a transplant form his wife (74) there are advances all the time with new improved machines etc, x

THANK YOU, JAYKAY. YOU ARE SO UPBEAT- I FEEL WHINEY AND CHILDISH. I HAVE KIDNEY STONES THAT DON'T PASS- JUST BUILD UP WITH NO SYMPTOMS. WENT TO NUTRITIONIST- DIET FOR KIDNEY STONES CONFLICTS WITH DIET FOR KIDNEY DISEASE. TOLD TO DRINK CRANBERRY FOR KIDNEY STONES. - AND TO AVOID ANY FRUIT ENDING IN "BERRY" FOR KIDNEY DISEASE. JUST TRYING TO FOLLOW DIET-LOW PROTEIN, GALLON OF WATER PER DAY-GETTING ME CRAZY LOOKING UP EVERYTHING I EAT. I HAVE MILD COPD, NORMAL TO OCCASIONALLY HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE. JUST ON MEDS FOR ANXIETY, DEPRESSION AND PAIN MEDS- SPINAL FRACTURES FROM OSTEOPOROSIS. I KNOW MY BODY PARTS ARE WEARING OUT, BUT HOPED WOULD BE ALL AT ONE TIME- NOT A DISEASE TO TAUNT ME.

I was told I was CKD stage 3 in 2006 the reading now is pretty much the same as then. I am now 66 the doctor has told me I have plenty of kidney function to carry me through to the end of my life.I hold my breath for every blood test that I have hoping that the doctor is right! Don't worry that doesn't help, you could well slip back into stage 3 with your next check it does fluctuate.😊

KIDNEY FUNCTION TEST. RECENTLY STARTED NEW DIET, NO MORE THAN 40g PROTEIN AND A GALLON WATER PER DAY. LOVE TUNA- TOLD NOT TO EAT- MERCURY. NOT MUCH LEFT-CHICKEN, TURKEY, EGGS- USED TO ENJOY MEALTIME AND OCCASIONALLY EATING OUT- NO MORE.STAGE 2 FOR OVER 5 YEARS-NOW STAGE 3- SCARY. YES, I DREAD EVERY KIDNEY FUNCTION TEST.

my husband remained at stage 3 for at least 15 years they say that most people as they age don't have full function my mum also had very bad kidney stones which blocked her tube in the kidney its still stuck there & one had split the kidney she was rushed in to hospital as they thought they needed to dialyse thats been 10 years ago they put a stent in she improved to stage 3 then to stage 2 & is 84 this week! she worried at the time but she never thinks about it now she has a check up once a year just eat a good healthy normal diet unless you have been told otherwise & try not to worry x

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR ENCOURAGEMENT.. CONCERNED, HAD VERY LARGE STONE REMOVED 5 YEARS AGO-WITH HOOK- BECAUSE DON'T KNOW IF MORE ARE GROWING-THEY DON'T PASS-OR OTHER KIDNEY JUST SLOWING DOWN. DRINKING GALLON OF WATER A DAY, AND WATCHING DIET. I GUESS AS WE AGE, OUR "PARTS" SLOW DOWN. AGAIN-THANK YOU. GOD BLESS

sounds like that caused your problems mum had stones that were laser blasted succesfully, then 6 years later had one that was very large that blocked tube they couldn't remove & one that split the other that one they managed to remove succesfully your are doing your best by drinking plenty my mum also takes allopurinol which is supposed to help stop the stones re forming she gets checked now once a year with consultant & xray just to make sure nothings is changing! x

THANK YOU, PHILLEN. HAVE KIDNEY BLOOD WORK EVERY 3 MONTHS. CKD GOES FROM 2 TO3 AND BACK TO 2. STONES ARE IN RIGHT KIDNEY- OVER 50 YRS AGO, I HAD SEVERE INJURY TO LEFT KIDNEY- STOPPED FUNCTIONING FOR TWO WEEKS-THEN HEALED. NOT SURE IF DISEASE IS FOUSED IN ONE KIDNEY OR BOTH. STONES WERE DISCOVERED IN XRAY FOR DIFFERENT CAUSE. WILL ASK DOCTOR IF ALLOPURINOL IS AN OPTION FOR ME. NEVER PASSED ANY STONES-AND NEVER ANY PAIN. DIETS FOR STONES AND CKD CONFLICT- ONLY THING IN COMMON IS GALLON WATER PER DAY. CONFUSED AND STRESSED, BUT TRYING TO KEEP PROTEIN UNDER 40G PER DAYS. SEEMS TO BE MOST IMPORTANT IN DIET. THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR REPLY.

You sound very similar to my mum she was also given a diet sheet (not sure if she follows it though) xxx

I hope someone told you that it is only meat protein that has to be limited. Protein from eggs, dairy and plants are fine. Also, my GFR and creatinine can vary by how hydrated I am when I have the tests done.

THANK YOU-YES. IN ANY CASE, IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO AVOID ALL PROTEIN. NOW THAT I AM WATCHING IT, I AM AMAZED HOW MANY FOODS HAVE PROTEIN- I NEVER PAID ATTENTION BEFORE. SINCE I NOW DRINK GALLON WATER PER DAY, DEHYDRATION SHOULD NOT BE A PROBLEM. THANK YOU AGAIN. GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND GOD BLESS
