Looking for a tutor

Hi, I am the father of a eight year old boy.

His name is Èoghan, we have just had him diagnosed as severly dyslexic, he also has autism. We are looking for advice on getting him some additional help from a trained professional with experience in dyslexia. He already has an ehp for his autism, he is high functioning, very bright top 10%, however really struggles to read or write. We are very new to this and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Liam

My son was diagnosed as severely dyslexic he also has traits of Austism he attends a specialist dyslexic school in Lichfield with specialist teaching. It has made a world of difference to him. If u can find a school that specializes in teaching that is definately the way forward as a lot of input is needed which somebody after school isn’t really going to be of benefit because he is so severe. My son was 0.5 on the scale so that is very severe. If he is not as severe as that and further up scale he may benefit from couple of lessons after school. I doubt even if u had an Ehcp school would provide specialist teaching

Many thanks for you reply, were in East Yorkshire, I've pondered over the idea of sending him to a " specialist" school, it's tough to know what's best for Èoghan??

He's eight and has just been approved his EHCP level 5 ( highest) it equates to 27.5 hrs one to one. However he can retain information and self teaches himself. But our main concern is, he cannot and will not read or write, and whilst this remains so he falls further and further behind. His reading and writing skills are the same as a child in year 1.

Tbh age 8 and reading skills of a year 1 child my tom was year 5 and still at p levels so yes you’d son is behind but probably has put coping strategies in place. It is always worth contacting a specialist setting to discuss ur son. Ehcp aren’t really worth anything if not written correctly and I’m guessing they havnt given you specialist intervention for the dyslexia so he isn’t going to improve where he is. You can fight the local authority to get him placed somewhere more suitable in president

I got they will not automatically give you A placement. Have u private educational psychologist reports?? Or all local authority reports?? Think you need to visit a setting to see if they can help ur son he won’t be the only one who has these difficulties. Maple Hayes hall in Lichfield have many years experience maybe a call to them to discuss ur way forward of another school similar nearer to you but they r few and far between. A child with dyslexia doesn’t want to read and write so that is completely normal. Me and my son take it in turns to read a paragraph at bedtime when he was that age Charlie and the chocolate factory was his favourite
