I had TIA four days ago and we're all stumped. I am not overweight, great cholesterol, low blood pressure, no diabetes, don't smoke or drink excessively... what happened? I have been reading furiously and some say migraines and stress are a factor. Anyone else?

Hi, If you have read any of my other posts, you will know a little of my history. After my life changing incident I developed PTSD, ans stress for me to this day is still a big factor in my life which I am forced to control! Your stating what you did comes as no surprise to me and stress could well have been a contributory factor to my own TIA's. At the time I was acting as a 24/7 carer for my beloved Mum as she fought MND. Caring for a loved one s very stressful at times purely because it is a labour of love and devotion! I wish you well!

I too suffer from PTSD. I hadn't made the connection till now. Food for thought. Thank you.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. I'm pretty scared right now.

I completely understand your feelings after your TIA. Mine was a month ago, also perfectly fit with naturally low blood pressure. Have you been given any meds, I am on Clopidogrel, you did not say. Also 5day heart monitor. Seeing consultant again on 13th October. I believe it is normal for nothing to show up on scans etc. Doctor said it was a warning and to carry on as normal. Not so easy as it is bound to be on your mind

Nevertheless I am sure you have a feeling of utter disbelief about what has happened, I know I still do.

Hopefully if you get the right Meds it will not happen again. Good luck to you.

You've hit the nail on the head. I've nearly gone through every emotion here from euphoria to anger to utter disbelief. I just feel so out of control.

I am sure stress is a factor, I was a fit 37 year old when I had a stroke, but I was under a lot of stress following the suicide of a good friend's husband !

Seems the stress does factor in. Now just trying to figure out what to do about it.

Hello to you! I had a stroke May 16th and I am the same as you they do not know the cause? Stress could be a factor or genetics in my case? No physical signs as to why this happened. Not everything in medicine is black and white sadly!

Hi mmd16 how is It going with you now I had my stroke on 16 th may also got Meningjitis pnuemoccial and a brain absess same time ,I I wanted to know how you were getting on as I am still struggling with a lot of things, pain being one or them, I have been told that infection has gone but still have problems with stroke. I had it in my head I would be going back to work now, but not happening ,I'm just wandering about how people who had stroke around the same time are doing thanks mmd16

Hi Dawnie I am doing ok thank you. Have pain in my affected left shoulder but mostly back to normal on the outside. Still feeling blown away by it all but as they do not know the cause I have to move on. Not back working yet as I am not confident enough yet. You had a tougher time than me so you have more of a mountain to climb stick with it my friend ! I never had it in my head re a time scale for recovery but others told me 18 months so think I am doing well if that is so? 4 months is no time after your body has been under such a shock give yourself time.

Hi mmd16 nice to hear back you saying about your shoulder I have it in both now and pretty painful ,didn't have it in beginning also getting really bad pins and needles in left hand. I am not confident like I used to be and it worries me, I sometimes get fed up being home and then I see something else about someone and I consider myself a very lucky lady, I think my problem is I don't remember any of it for 10 days as was kept in an induced coma, so I don't think I've been that I'll if you can understand like you say confused, i think I will stay off until feel more confident and the balance problem sorts itself out.thanks for the advice ,I hope you keep doing well x

Like all of you i was fit even exercised 2 days before my stroke - went swimming and did my usual no of lengths. The only thing i can think of for mine was i always had blood pressure that was a little high but the doctor never put me on blood pressure tablets to lower it, but whats done is done and i am trying to rebuild my life even if it is a lot different. Like all of you we just have to try and cope no matter how hard so good luck and keep on trying

Hi, sometimes there just isn't a ready made answer and we have to just accept that we may never know,"why".

I've never been able to get to anywhere near any explanation of my cvst in October 14 ....so can only live as healthy a life as possible and hopefully won't have another seizure/stroke.

I've tried putting it to the back of my mind and carrying on the best I can with life plans which have had to be modified but not mothballed totally eg still planning to travel as much as possible....just not all in one go.

I'm celebrating my two years anniversary with a six weeks trip to India.....

Good luck ☺

Up date. Just left Stroke Unit at local hospital. MRI, CT scan, Carotid Artery ultra sound, ECG and blood work all negative. Final diagnosis: Hemiplegic migraine symptoms might include numbness or pins and needles, visual problems, confusion and speech problems. These problems usually go within 24 hours, but they may last a few days. A headache usually follows. This type of migraine can be particularly frightening as the symptoms are similar to a stroke but in hemiplegic migraine they usually develop more slowly, whereas a stroke is usually a sudden event. Caused by emotional stress and physical exhaustion, tension in the neck and shoulders. Referral to migraine clinic and stress management specialist. perhaps it's something others as ' clueless ' as me could look into.

Some strokes are apparently random events. I did aerobic exercise for 3 hours a week, blood pressure of 120/82, total cholesterol of 3.8, healthy diet but I still had a stroke (not a TIA). The Fifth Edition 2016 of the "National clinical guideline for stroke" suggests amongst other things that unexplained strokes are linked with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

My stroke was random. The beginning of the week i went swimming and did my usual half a mile swim (approx 32 lengths). Before that i had been in school doing breakfast club every morning and school cleaning in the afternoon. Went shopping and doing the normal weekly things people do. On the Friday i got up washed dressed went downstairs made a cup of tea and toast before going to do breakfast club sat down and then i had my stroke. It seems it can hit any time no matter how fit you keep yourself. I still worry about getting another one but decided if it happens it happens.
