"Simple lifestyle measures have been shown to be effective in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes. To help prevent type 2 diabetes and its complications, people should:

* achieve and maintain a healthy body weight;

* be physically active – doing at least 30 minutes of regular, moderate-intensity activity on most days. More activity is required for weight control;

* eat a healthy diet, avoiding sugar and saturated fats; and

* avoid tobacco use – smoking increases the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Dear Gangadharan

You are absolutely right in your saying so.

This is the conventional wisdom which everybody including all doctors, Nutritionist would advise to prevent diabetes and it's complications....

There is a saying prevention is better than cure ! But I am not sure how many people would be serious for prevention????

But all our members now that they are diagnosed with diabetes are definitely serious for a cure and to avoid complications.....and so everyone one now is trying to follow what you are saying .....but many of us land up in complications in spite of our seriousness in complying ...........

I don't think any member takes tobacco....or Sugar......but the fact that saturated fat does enough damage which people still tend to disbelieve......

If I say meat is bad, there would be dozens of members who will beat me up😀 if not physically , but mentally...

So as you say Diet & life style change is something which is very important....but my definition of a healthy diet & healthy life style may not be acceptable to you....and yours definition may not be acceptable to me. Here is the conflict 😀

People would say that their diet is the most healthiest in the earth.....and what they eat is absolutely correct as their blood sugar under control....they tend to ignore all other health parameters associated with insulin resistance...but they tend to forget that diabetes is not all about blood sugar control only......it is a kind of metabolic disorder with insulin resistance or / and insulin deficiency which simultaneously affects pancreas, Heart, liver, kidney, Bones, Nerves, eye, Legs.......Brain!

It may not be reversible totally, but manageable to a great extent...it is possible to delay or halt the progression of the disorder.

So what is a Healthy Diet and Healthy life style for a Diabete to have control on his diabetes , avoid complications and to reduce insulin resistance ?????

A healthy diet & healthy lifestyle is one by which one can have total control on following 8- parameters:

(1) Able to either lose weight if obese or to gain weight if underweight so as to bring ones BMI to 20-23.

(2) Able to maintain Blood sugar fasting below 100, PP below 140 and HBA1C around 6..... with out or with minimal medications..

(3) Maintain a blood pressure of 110/70 without blood pressure medication.

(4) Lipid profile LDL, HDL, Triglyceride , VLDL as per reference range without a Statin.- the specification /reference range remains the same throughout the whole world...

(You can not have your own reference range. Afterall, if one is hospitalized , the doctors will treat you as per the reference range ! )

(5) hsCRP a less than 1

(6) Blood sugar fluctuations minimal ....it should not happen that one goes to 70 at fasting and PP comes to 150-200...

(7) Your LFT ( liver function test ) & KFT ( kidney function test ) is within normal range... Most important even if Urea, creatinine test comes normal, one should undergo a test called albuminurea and albumin creatinine ratio... This is the first sign of kidney failure which can be arrested if detected early...or else by the time it shows up as high urea, creatinine....it becomes too late....if kidney damage starts ...it would progress in to End stage Renal failure.....

Similarly , one should be aware of the elevated liver enzymes....and sign of NAFLD.

(8) you have a sound sleep of 7-8 hours daily without sleep disturbance. If you are not getting sound sleep....then there is something wrong going on...you need to figure it out ...

You also need to find out if you have anxiety, depressions...which calls for proper treatment.
