I often asked this, why did my grand parents took paan and tobacco?

It was an addiction, like smoking or chewing tobacco.

I have heard of this. In Guam, I know that many people chew on the Betel nut, and that it's an aphrodisiac. Does the same happen when you chew on the Betel leaves? Does anyone know?

Betel nut is not that useful, health wise.Only The leaf is considered good for health. They are different plants,as you know.

betel leaf is certainly not an aphrodisiac without additives.

Ask the paanwala where to get get them or locals who chew paan. In India, they must be available everywhere.

Went through the cited article. does not show any evidence linking it to any insulin like effects is lacking at the best this sentence from the write up summarises it.

Thus, there is abundant evidence showing beneficial effects of BL alone in experimental animals, but its validation in humans is still lacking. There is no head to head comparison of incidence of oral cancer in Quid chewers with or without BL.

Dear sir, the article is iñformative. All the properties of pan were known to ancients. What I want to add pan can be taken with fennel seeds alone to get all the benefits, after all it is organic, green and full of beneficial properties.Unfortunately we Indians are taking pan with tobacco which is dangerous.
