Vitamin D supplements in large doses don't prevent Type 2 Diabetes- A large study indicates.

Nowadays, the physicians around the world prescribe Vitamin D level Test for all people in general and especially type 2 diabetes and invariably most of the result is very low level of vitamin D in blood. This prompts the physician to recommend large doses of vitamin D @ 60,000 IU per week for 2 Months and thereafter 60,000 IU once in a month for 6 months. Some doctors even go to the extent of prescribing 4000 IU per day for a year or more.

This study shows that Such maga doses not help in prevention of Diabetes. In fact several such studies in the recent past had also indicated similar results, though long back the studies indicated a link between type 2 diabetes and Vitamin d.

Nevertheless, vitamin D is essential for bone health and one should not have an extremely low level and one should get their vitamin D from sun light (limited exposure my be 30 mnts per day during noon time 3-4 days a week- excessive sun exposure can cause skin cancer) .

You can also also get your vitamin D from natural food sources like fish, egg, dairy product in stead of resorting to heavy doses of supplements.

Thanks namaha for bringing the useful information.

VITAMIN D which we get from dairy products is sufficient for our health. Then exposure from sun light in our ordinary routine schedule is more than enough . Every alternate day the medical scientists and doctors bring out new theories to lure us to go for their drugs and supplements . There are many reasons for diabetes and other autoimmune diseases rather disorders and weight gain like drugs prescribed for depression , migraines , BP , Hypothyroidism , Asthma . Arthritis , lupus .Pcos , Insomnea , Excess eating , eating junk foods , pollution of water , food , air , and last but not least pollution of psyche with greed and unhealthy comparisons . In this scenario Vitmain D 's role is minimal .

Please note that 100g of A1/A2 milk has only 1 Iu/ml of vitamin D, which is too less.

Not only milk but also curds , butter milk , other milk products taken with less carbs of whole grains and vegetables containing D vitamin is recommended . Actually more vitamin supplements and tablets are harmful .

Got your point. Ghee also has Vitamin D. I agree that vitamin supplements might be harmful on a longer run.

Yes , Barani may be right in telling that there is low Vit D level in Dairy products in its natural form.

But in fact most of the countries have started fortifying the dairy products and many other eatables with vitamin D so that one need not resort to heavy dose pills at additional cost.

Also Sea fish especially cod liver oil has a good source of vitamin D and Vitamin A and to some extent EPA/ DHA. These are also available in pill forms which could be a better option.

But even after all care to get Vitamin D from all natural sources , we must not forget to check vitamin D level at least once in a year and and we ensure that it does not go down drastically beyond minimum requirement.
