Hydroxychloroquine is a well known anti-malaria drug being used since ages for controlling Malaria.
Now successful trial with this drug Indicates that it can act as SGLT-2 transporter
(Sodium Glucose transporter) and can remove Glucose through urine.
The SGLT-2 drugs namely canagliflozin, dapagliflozin, and empagliflozin now approved by USFDA and used for T2 diabetes. While as a good concept, the drugs are being used all over the world , but have side effects such as UTI.
If Hydroxychloroquine can take care of the UTI issue, then it is going to be a novel drug. SGLT2 drugs don't whip the pancreas, neither it acts in liver . It basically enables kidney to reabsorb the glucose from blood and route it out along with urine.
