Have you consulted with your doctor about the weight loss/gain issue? Are your blood sugars higher than normal? With high blood sugars, a person is able to loose weight when they aren’t trying to do anything to have that happen.

My fbs fluctuates between 114 & 102 and most of the time remains 104 & 106 and the normal value on the report is shown upto 110 normal. My pp2 normally around 135. However, when diagnosed it was 165 and recently during viral arthritis it was 155 and has now come down to normal. My last hba1c when diagnosed one year back was 6.9 and thereafter around 6.6 n 6.4. But on tip I started drinking 1 litres water empty stomach, stopped sugar totally and reduced food intake and then I lost 7 kgs in one month resulting in muscle loss and sickly looks. I am constantly in contact with two MDs who are diabetolosts but they are silent on this matter.

The A1c results are great!😀 Are you counting carbs for each meal and snack?

No. But have stopped rice, sugar, any kind of sweet s, banana, mango, grapes etc. I eat apples, pomegranate, guava, berries, and other low gi fruits . I take soaked fenugreek seeds empty stomach. For breakfast two chapattis/omellet/bread butter. Lunch three chapttis/bajra jowar rotla, daal, subji with salad. Evening one cup stavia tea some snacks. Dinner around 9 pm dalia khichadi/roti or some light snacks. At 10.30 one glass of milk with a pinch of Haldi. I think this is not high carb diet. For laymen its difficult to count carbs in foods. I do kapalbhati for 15 minutes and anulomvilom for 10 minutes in morning first thing, other light exercise and 30 minutes evening walk without fail.

You are taking lots of carbs.Still need to restrict.

You are following very standard and common protocol . I suggest you prepone dinner timing to 7pm so that you have 12-13 hours of fasting/no snacking period .

Try to take 1-2 chapatis less so carb will be less by 50-100gm

if you have heart disease or risk then hba1c should be below 5.7 are you on metformin as it is notorious for weight loss .

for a known diabetic it is impractical to aim at reducing HBA1c less than 6.2,and no purpose is also served. HBA!c less than 6 will certainly predispose to hypoglycemic episodes, besides promoting extreme exhaustion.

You are right. Even my diabetologist advised me not to aim for HbA1C less than 6.5 because hypoglycemia is more dangerous than hyperglycemia. This is especially true for elderly people. That is the reason why American Diabetes Association has set the target of 7.0 for good control of diabetes.

Good on you Vsthak that you can control BG without meds 👍🌻

I totally agree with Control cause that diabetics should aim to maintain A1C below 5.7% (normal BG) in order to avoid complications. At least keep it below 6% is good enough. The most effective and safe method to controlling BG is lifestyle changes as we will not have issues that tend to occur if using diabetes medications such as hypoglycemia, dizzyness, weight gain or even falling especially for elderly. I also recommend diabetics who have good BG control to consider reducing the dose of medication or even stopping taking. Of course with a consultation with your doctor. Healthy lifestyle doesn't only benefit diabetes conditions but also lowering BP and blood cholesterol which help reducing risks of cardiovascular diseases.

Hi,

Your case is not uncommon. Even I have lost 7 kg in two months after becoming diabetic but I am only 4 kg less than my normal weight. This is not for any concern for the doctors because less weight improves overall health. I am not worried as long as I stabilize at this weight. What is important is to stabilize the weight even if it is slightly less than your ideal weight.

It is best to consult a dietician who will design a diet of low carb and at the same time help you gain weight. In the meantime, adding the following might help you gain weight without adding too many carbs. Basically, you have to look for food items of low carb but high calorie. Some of the things I can suggest which might help you gain weight without adding too many carbs are:

1. All kinds of nuts such as groundnuts, pistachios, almonds, walnuts etc. Particularly, groundnuts have lot of calories. You can include nuts as a snack in mid-morning and evening at tea time.

2. Peanut butter, ghee

3. Avocados

4. Whey protein

5. Exercises for building muscle.

6. Eggs.

7. Salads sprinkled with virgin olive oil or pure coconut oil.

I suggest you download the app, " Life in Control" from playstore. This was designed and developed by Indian team and has a variety of Indian food items in the diet plan. This will help you keep track of carbs as well as calories.

Hope this is of some help. All the best.
