If one is diabetic and also has high triglycerides, is it safe to do the LCHF diet? It may control sugar, but then what will happen to the triglycerides in the body?

Elevated levels of triglycerides are associated with atherosclerosis, even in the absence of hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol levels), and predispose to cardiovascular disease. Very high triglyceride levels also increase the risk of acute pancreatitis.

High triglyceride levels may be due to:

Cirrhosis or liver damage

Diet low in protein and high in carbohydrates

Underactive thyroid

Nephrotic syndrome (a kidney disorder)

Other medicines such as female hormones

Poorly controlled diabetes

Disorder passed down through families in which there are high amounts of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood.

Overall, the treatment of elevated triglyceride levels focuses on increased exercise and changes in the diet. Drugs to lower triglyceride levels may be used to prevent pancreatitis for levels above 500 mg/dL.

For people with mildly or moderately high levels of triglycerides lifestyle changes are recommended. This may include restriction of carbohydrates and fat in the diet. Medications are recommended in those with high levels of triglycerides, with fibrates being recommended first.

Marine fish oils naturally contain triglycerides with omega-3 fatty acids. Oily fish, such as salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies, menhaden, and sardines may be consumed. Oils from these fish have a profile of around seven times as much omega-3 as omega-6.

Avoid consumption of alcohol.

Most bakery items contain High Fructose Corn Syrup. (Lays, Curkure, Oreo, Coco cola and other aerated drinks). High Fructose Corn Syrup is a concentrated form of sugar, fructose derived from corn. It increases body fat, cholesterol and triglycerides and it also makes you hungry.

Thanks but my question is on LCHF diet that whether a diabetic person with high TG can go on this diet plan? In other words I can ask that what diet plan such a person should take? As you said low carb/low fat/high protein?

As already stated, non-essential fat should be reduced in the diet.

The root cause of high triglyceride level are from high consuming of simple sugars in all forms especially sugary processed foods and highly processed trans fats in our diet. Hence, eliminating these causes as well as including regular exercise would help lower triglyceride level.

LCHF diet will help control blood sugar level due to its restriction on CARBS while consuming high amounts of good natural fats and small amount of proteins. You can see that if you strictly follow LCHF diet, you will naturally remove the root causes of high triglyceride level.

Moreover, LCHF diet would in majority lower triglyceride level and increase HDL level. While total cholesterol and LDL level would remain the same. However each person has different body composition which may respond differently towards foods and perhaps medicines and supplements.
