SULPHONYLUREA AND METFORMIN

What exactly are the differences between these two forms of medication - their action on the body, effects etc.? I had been on metformin for several years to control my type 2 diabetes. About 2 years ago the doctor asked me to switch to Dibizide M 1/2 - 0 - 1/2 and metformin (250) 0 - 1 - 0. Since taking Dibizide M I have been experiencing hypos if I do not eat something within 2 hours of breakfast. I am not aware of the same thing after dinner. This is a problem I had never had while taking metformin alone. The other meds I take are Telpres CT 40/6.25 for BP and Ecosprin AV 75 for cholesterol. I am a poor practitioner of the LCHF diet. Is it the destiny of type 2 diabetics to graduate to sulphonylurea as the disease progresses?

Metformin is an example of sulppnyl urea drugs commonly prescribed for increasing the production of insulin and increasing it's effective usage,thereby decreasing blood sugar level.Dibizide is a similarly functioning drug.Dibizide M is a combination drug with metformin.This information is gathered from the internet.

If this drug is causing you hypo,you are well advised to consult your doctor forthwith and get the drug dosage moderated

Metformin does not belong to sulphonylurea group of drugs. It belongs to biguanides.

To add,

Metformin reduces production of glucose from liver and increases periferal uptake of glucose. Sulphonylurea increases insulin production from pancreas.

I am on both these drugs and also taking sitagliptin100 mg.

Request for your input on Daonil 5 mg.

Daonil 5 mg was prescribed for my wife (60).

This contains Glibenclamide.

She has good relief and in fact her Fasting sugar goes down to 70s few days.

She was declared diabetic just last year.

She takes 1/2 pill once in the morning and before bedtime.

Although I am a diabetic for more than 3 decades, I was never on this medication.

I follow (great advice of leaned members of this forum) and follow LCHF formula, as much as I can and keeping it in control. It is in control, with the exception of travel time etc.

Again, could some one offer opinion on what Daonil 5mg does.

Does this increase insulin secretion ? or some other reaction.

Any long time side effects if she is on Daonil.

Sulfonylurea medicines increase the amount of insulin produced by the pancreas, and insulin lowers blood sugar.
