In order for our blood to effectively transport oxygen and other vital nutrients, its pH needs to stay within a very narrow range—7.36 to 7.44, though the closer to 7.4 exactly, the better. Deviations too far in either direction can be dangerous. Most tissues in our body are naturally alkaline. However, when we eat acid-forming foods ... or when we work our muscles... when we're exposed to acid rain from the environment, or pollutants in the air or water ... when we take prescription drugs... or even when we just breathe, we generate acid. That acid must then be neutralized to keep the pH of our blood balanced.

One important fact to know about the pH scale is that there is a 10-fold difference between each number. So, a liquid with a pH of 6 is 10 times more acidic than pure water, which is generally agreed to have a pH of 7, and a liquid with a pH of 5 is 100 times more acidic than water.

The next time you reach for a can of soda, keep in mind that the typical soft drink has a pH of 3, meaning it is a whopping 10,000 times more acidic than water.

  • The body strives to maintain homoeostasis. What evidence is there that the pH of ingested foods causes acidosis? Weston A Price couldn't find any. He was a vegetarian, and one of his greatest disappointments was his inability to find a healthy indigenous vegetarian community.

  • No proof or evidence that eggs push one into acidosis. I have been eating 2 to 3 eggs a day, 2 to 3 cups black coffee with VCO since 48+ months and no GERD, no acidity feeling etc is there ever since I started doing that.

    Alkaline diets are a myth and is just another way of pushing toward all veg diets where most that one is allowed to eat is vegetables etc and even nuts are out. :)

  • Ketoacidosis applies primarily with type 1 diabetics. They don't naturally secrete insulin and in the absence of insulin it's easier to develop this life threatening issue.

    Type 2 diabetic always secrete insulin and most often to an excess. In the presence of even a small amount of insulin present it's near impossible to get ketoacidosis...

    This is commonly brought up in error by persons claims that low carbohydrates will lead to this condition and that is simply 100% wrong.

    Severely restricting carbohydrates results in a state of ketosis, which means you're burning body fat instead of sugar for energy. Ketosis is good for you and ketoacidosis is deadly for you but if you're a type 2 diabetic it's meaningless for 99.9% of the population of type 2 diabetics...

  • LCHF caues DKA only for those who don't understand the science of LCHF at all and that includes most mainstream doctors too. It is just a scare tactics against LCHF, when all other ranting fails.

    There are many Type 1 also living on LCHF diet

  • DKA occurs with very high blood sugars and is in complete absence of insulin.

  • A new drug - Invokana - is already reported to have caused DKA in Type 2 even with normal blood sugars and living on a so called healthy diet - HIGH CARB LOW FAT. But, since it's a drug with lot of money at stake, no expert will talk about it till it becomes an epidemic by when there will be a new drug to control DKA because of Invokana :(
