Why it is that blood sugar is tested after two hours of drinking glucose or food ?

It is always suggested to get fasting and after two hours of food .Is there any reason or logic behind or it is arbitrary ?

One of our members has given detailed rationale on how blood sugar should be tested to distinguish between glucose intolerance and insulin unavailability.

Many web sites suggest half the normal last meal before fasting. After the fasting test take 75 gram glucose and test @ 45 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes and 2 hours.

After 1:30 hours: 113

After 2:00 hours: 106

After 2:30 hours: I did not want to waste my testing strip.

After 3:00 hours: 93]

I think 'Post Glucose' test gives peak figure between 45 & 75 minutes..in 2 hours it gives RBS score. Two hours is PP. [e-mail]

Either I have misread various posts or there is some definite model about reading BS level I have difficulty comprehending. Perhaps Shooter George has clarified rationale for reading (I do not recall which member did it)...

That was exhaustive answer . May be you are right about average glucose levels,but there may be other more logical reason as to why PP 2 hours is selected. Just like why overnight 8-10 hours fasting is essential for fasting blood sugar test? Why not 8-10 hours fasting any time for fasting blood sugar ? There is a sound logic behind this. BTW average of 4,6,8 is not 9 but 6 .

I have been thinking of day time ten hour fasting. Morning levels are high for non diabetic individuals too. For us it is extra high.

Day time 10 hr fast and testing bs,a very good thinking. But can you combine it with usual night time fasting blood sugar ? Comparing two,interesting. Morning fasting levels should not be high in non diabetics,if it is so a complete blood sugar check should done. Thanks,you are a thinking and rational person.

It is very clear that when it comes to subjects related to diabetes people do not interact rationally and logically,instead trade unwanted allegations and accusations. A very sorry state of affairs.

But why it is only after 2 hours. What is the importance of 2 hours. Why it is internationally accepted norm. Why 1 hr,3 hr, etc. Is not the norm.

your body needs 2 hours to respond to the glucose in blood releasesd after digestion and your pancreatic insulin to regulate its level to as near normal as is possible.

You are absolutely right. Within two hours after ingestion of any food, the circulating insulin and sugar returns to pre meal or basal levels in non diabetic persons . That is why two hours ppbs.

If we go to any diabetic clinic the doctor wanted the BS levels fasting and 1,30/1.45 hours BS level after breakfast. Is it a correct way to check the BS levels. Pl. enlighten the ordinary viewers like me on the subject Happy DIWALI

What is written after this is exclusively my personal opinion is open to review.

IT APPEARS TO ME THAT THE PANCREAS SUSPENDS PRODCTION OF INSULIN AT 2 HOURS OF COMPLETION OF A FOOD INTAKE, TILL THE NEXT SWEET/STARCH INTAKE.

It is known since long that in non diabetics blood sugar peak within 25-30 mins.irrespective of what type of carb. Is eaten. Of course with diabetics it is different and it is essential to know which food spikes blood sugar and what is time interval. Frequent bs testing ,part of diabetes self management. But bs testing should be based on understanding of the subject and with a purpose and according to ones own needs.

I am surprised to read the unnecessary arguments We require healthy discussion and convey our experiences so that we may control the diabetic disorder.( I may not describe the diabetes as a disease)Every month I am going to diabetic clinic and checking the BS levels.Recent month it was 123(FBS) and173(PPBS after 2hrs.breakfast)As per the guidelines of Diabetic clinic ,the pre meal BS level should be 70-130 mg/dl and post meal BS level should be below 180 mg/dl. Presently I am not taking any medicine and taking normal food.Doctor advised me to take Glycomet 500 and I may follow the advice of doctor after checking the BS levels next month. I humbly solicit expert opinions/guidlines on this. WITH HUMBLE REGARDS

True. After 2 hrs of taking meal/75 gm. of glucose orally, Blood sugar must come within range of fasting level in controlled diabetics & in non Diabetics also. Thats the guiding factor to increase or decrease the dose.
