My experience with LCHF diet.

I am a diebetic since 1986 type 2. On insulin since 88-89. Undergone CABG in 2007.I am also hypertensive.Since last six months my bs is out of control, going much higher than 200mg pp and near 200 fasting.I tried to control bs by cutting carb ie I reduced chapaties from 4-5 to two m/e.For breakfast I was taking muesli about 30 gms with milk/ curd since long.No reduction of bs was noticeable .My HbA1c about 3months back was 7.4,lipid profile.ceatinin and blood urea ,all within normal limits, liver function tests normal.Since more that two months I further reduced chapaties to two m/e weighing about 20-25 gms eact chapati and for bf muesli to 20gms with 100-125 gms of curd.Of course chapatie, dal etc with copious ghee servings.Curd is always full creame milk.Ample vegetable and salad, with two boiled eggs off and on and chicken or mutton that also off and on.Added to all these walnut, almonds and peanut are part of life since long.I am used to eat one orange or mossami everyday.

After two months again checked,HbA1c was 7.5,lipid profile,no change and no change in bs.

Now since two days I have further reduced chapati to one m/e,stopped taking muesli and fruit and also statin which I was taking since many years.

I am keeping a close watch on myself and let know the results after one week.

Any advice, suggestion for improvement,Every body is most welcome.

Remove chapati from your diet. Walk at least for 30 minutes.

patliputra, wish you good luck. Apparently, you have has a rising trend with BS. Can you quantify rate of increase (trend line) for two weeks. four weeks and eight weeks prior to carb modification? Since it is an old case, looking at recent trend line may provide better guidance. [ A second point is: Though causal relationship is, to my knowledge, not deterministically established, there may be some positive BS outcomes through managing hypertension and lipid.

patliputra in reply to norreal

My bp is 130/68 mm/hg and lipid profile is within normal limits. So no worries on that front.

There is no definite pattern or trend in bs rise.

There are many factors which affect blood sugar. Stress, beta cell dysfunction, insulin resistance. Age is also factor. Because insulin resistance is always going to increase with age. If you are insulin deficient then sometimes exercise won't help much.Overall assessment of the situation is needed. Diet, medicine and exercise all aspects needs to be attended. As you are non vegetarian you can try by further lowering carbs, if it doesn't help to lower your BS you have to consult a doctor if any change in meds is required.

Thank you.But I do not believe in so called Heath food. When every thing is provided in a natural way, what is the logic of getting it in unnatural way.

Dear Patliputra,

This is only our suggestion with my own experience. Under no way LCHF can go wrong as per my reading in various sites and experience of different persons. In the first place you should totally discontinue the consumption of Bread Chapathi, Parantha Rice suji, Dalia etc. You should not consume any food made out of Wheat Barley, Corn Ragi, Jowar, Bajra etc. If you want to consume you can consume in very little quantity.Instead you can consume whole egg, Chicken meat, Fish, Dals of moong, Arahar(Tur) Chana whole or chana dal etc You should, in my opinion not consume any fruit in the first two months hereafter. Once the BS comes under control you may start consuming in a limited quantity..Try to consume Coconut Oil, or Ghee, or Butter . It may be difficult to adopt for this life style in the beginning there after it becomes a habit Within one week your Sugar level will fall.I am around 69 years old and diabetic since 19 years and the results started showing within a weeks time Please give it a try. and wishing you best of luck for a speedy recovery

I agree with most of the things you say.If you analyse my diet you will find that I have already incorporated the things you want me to do.

I have also done extensive research on diabetes and diabetic diet. You might be knowing that from the posts which I wrote. But I do have certain reservation about LCHF diet which I will bring to light during a course of time.

By the way I am older than you and my diabetes is much older than yous.thanks for every thing and grateful to you for your good wishes.

You see I have restricted chapati to only3 per day, each weighing 20 gms ,so it only60gms and it comes to about 40 gms of carb.If I include carb from every source even then carb would be less than 60 gms.It is quite near ketogenic diet. But it is only 2days,I will be testing my bs tomorrow and I will make it available .

By the way I can tolerate daal and paneer together pretty well.

Hello Friend, from your note I see that you are eating wheat still. Let me tell you about myself. I was diagnosed with Diabetes2 last year at the age of 58. My fasting BS was 165 and PPBS was 350. My HbA1c was 9.5. Immediately I went into Operation LCHF and was greatly helped by Anup. Today my fasting BS is 98 and PPBS is

106. No rice or wheat or sugar in any of my meals. TOTALLY OFF.

my daily routine will give you an Idea of ho youcan adapt to this healthier life. morning 5 Kms walk. Breakfast on oats. Lunch on salads and cooked veg and a big bowl of Dahi(fresh), evening some stretching exercises, light weight training(thrice a week Max) meditaion at night. Evening diet similar to afternoo. A handful of peanuts/almonds/walnuts twice a day, like midmorning and evening. you can try this diet and lifestyle. But yes, I retired last year and now have the time to for all this. All the best, and, like I said you can adapt the above to suit you better.

Thanks for writing. It appears that you are taking oats twice a day, though quantity is not mentioned.Oat is also a cereal and contains high carb only marginally lower than wheat.Otherwise basically they are not much different as far as carb. content is concerned. As I said in earlier post I have certain reservation about LCHF,and I have made a few glaring observations.I will present it soon before forum members for their comments.

Mr Patliputra I have Oats for breakfast, which like all normal people I have once a day. Where have I mentioned having Breakfast twice a day? Lol

I never said you take break fast twice.but I did say that it appears that you take oat twice.I was mistaken and I am sorry for that.No need to be sarcastic.

Thanx for that lengthy reply.perhaps it is cut and paste from some where.but please understand that we are talking about definite and proven things which have sound scientific basis backed by years of extensive and varied research, supported by clinical trials.

You may be right in your own way, perhaps Ayurvedic system but it is not backed up by scientific data.In future it may be so but not now.

Still thank you for your pain and labour.

I am surprised to find your post,as it is a year old. Nevertheless ,please note that I am 72 years. I gave a very serious try to lchf, but it brought disastrous result for me. Just after writing that post and next 9-10 months it was a life like in a boiling cauldron. Though all through the period I stuck to lchf, and paid a heavy price in terms of finance and physical health.. It is only after I shifted to a balanced diet with reduced fat that I could recover. I never posted those things to avoid a turmoil in this forum.

in reply to patliputra

Hi Patliputra,

Apparently I did not know a couple of things about you. One, that LCHF did not work for you. Two, that you are 72 years old.

LCHF has worked for me. Saturated fat in the form of coconut oil, seeds, nuts, etc. Cutting carbs drastically has helped me greatly.

For me, 60% saturated fat, 20% proteins and 20% carbs with 2 Metformin (with breakfast and dinner) does the trick.

To each their own.

All the very best, Patliputra,

Regards,

in reply to

Yep, percentages are approximate. I don't get hassled by slight variations here or there. But, overall, I have reduced carbs & increased saturated fats hugely. Of course, most quacks won't agree. But, then most have "bought" their degrees :-)

Best.

patliputra profile image
patliputra in reply to

I also do not know any thing about you except that we have interacted and several times you have recommended me. Thanks for that.

It is good to know that you have benefitted following lchf. Although I have been branded by ........,as antagonist of lchf,as a matter of fact I have never criticised any dietary system. All the more because diabetes, blood sugar regulation, effect of different diet on different persons based on genetic make up,ethnicity ,food habits ,regional factors etc are not fully understood and are very complicated issues. Forget about all these,I agree " to each their own ".

By the way may I ask, how could you and others knew that Natraj is interacting with me on thread which is a year old ? Unless...........

With best wishes.

in reply to patliputra

Patliputra,

I usually receive an e-mail from HealthUnlocked which gives a summary of the discussions taking place. This particular discussion, though a year or more old, was top of the list, indicating new additions to the discussion. I was curious and checked out. Then decided to add my bit as well. Thats all. I know absolutely no one on this board personally nor am interested to do so quite frankly :-)

Over and out,

Type 2.

Personally I don't know about others. It is unlikely for person to undergo multiple cardiac surgery ,if you mean CABG, and his EC G to be normal. Even when a person undergoes multiple angioplasty, his ECG won't be normal.

If you ask me it is hard to believe an average person strictly following lchf years on. All those saying so, actually don't know how much carb or fat they are taking. Of course exceptions are there.

Hope you will understand,I don't believe in hearsay.

I am sorry ,,I thought I am responding to Natraj.
