Background retinopathy

Hi have been diabetic type 2 for a few years diet only, had a letter back after having the yearly diabetes eye screening saying I have background retinopathy. Gp said I didn’t need to test my blood sugars daily and didn’t need metaformin, have a blood test yearly, my level was 44 last year. Could my sugar levels suddenly gone up to cause this background retinopathy, has any body else had this problem wondering if my Gp should put me on metaformin if my sugar levels are to high, really don’t want to go blind. Thank you for any response.

Thank you for your reply, having the blood test on the 6th September then have a phone appointment on the 15th to discuss the results, originally the Gp said I would see a diabetic nurse. My husband is losing his eye sight he can’t drive anymore, so really need to stop the retinopathy getting worse, if I’m not seeing a diabetic nurse really don’t feel from the answers this Gp gave me over the phone she will be much help. Do you know which nuts and seeds are the best to eat? Will try your suggestions thank you very much.
