Metformin is the first line medication for type 2 diabetes. It is generally an effective medication that assists in lowering blood glucose levels when used with a diabetes friendly diet. As with all medications, there is the possibility of side effects that effect some people. The most common side effects are stomach related but they can sometimes be stopped or made less troublesome by using an extended release formulation of metformin. Emerging research on repurposing metformin has shown it to be helpful in reducing the risk of some cancers, Alzheimer’s and heart disease. google.co.uk/amp/s/www.endo...

Metformin is a widely used medication - uses do extend beyond type 2 diabetes. Many type 2 diabetics benefit from using it.

metformin can interfere with uptake of dietary B12 - an essential vitamin and as the side effects overlap with symptoms of diabetes it is often missed. Some studies show that this affects up to 40% of those taking metformin - so periodic monitoring of B12 levels would be a good idea but isn't something that is formally recommended in standards. The treatment for B12 absorption problem is periodic injections and there does seem to be some evidence that in this case metformin actually helps make the use of B12 more efficient.
