I have a very fatty pancreas and have been very unwell for several weeks. What is the ideal diabetes eating plan?

I had my gall bladder removed age 29 over 30 years ago and common bile duct stones 2 years ago. I have been on a low fat low sugar eating plan as I had been feeling so unwell. I feel better and lost 15lbs from 22/12/13 to 31/01/14 and weigh myself four weekly. I have high cholesterol and BP

I was always told that eating a 'normal' well balanced meal, as non-diabetics do, was the best. A little carbs - I eat no more than 2 rounds of bread a day; no more than 2 pieces of fruit a day - can be high in sugar, proteins, and plenty of fresh veg. If I feel I need something sweet I will make up a pint of sugar free jelly!! Everything in moderation is the best, in my opinion! XX

That's true Sue32. I find that my eating plan has really made a difference. I'm not a fruit person but like berries and the occasional apple. I love all green veg cauliflower parsnip carrots peppers and have these dry roasted with white meat but mostly fish. I love beans and pulses so have not felt deprived. I have a little cheese and eggs and love walnuts and almonds pine nuts in my salads - I was so worried about how unwell I felt - I do not want to ruin it!

It's quite a difficult thing to control....2 days are never the same for me. My late husband was T1 and he could eat the same things 2 days running and his blood sugars would be different each day. I'm not a big fruit eater either, although I try to have a banana for my breakfast; another thing I'm not good at - breakfast! I love my veggies, although parsnips are quite a starchy veg - much like potatoes. I love lentils but I have found they raise my blood sugars quite a bit! I make my own cheese sauce for my cauli and broccoli and have adapted a really good and simple sweet and sour/BBQ sauce for my meats and stir fries. Combine equal amounts of tomato ketchup, soy sauce and Worc. sauce, add 1 clove of garlic (or cheat and buy the stuff in tubes like I do), a tsp of ginger (again, very lazy ginger in jars, or powdered) and a few chilli flakes. Mix well and either coat your chops or whatever, also use in stir fries. I find 1/2 tbsp of ketchup etc. is enough for me!! Good luck...it sounds like you're doing all the right things!!! XXX :)

Thanks sue32 - I will definitely try the sauce and use the low,sal low sugar ketchup - it reminds me of a recipe I lost many years ago for BBQ's. I'm seeing a consultant on 24th so hopefully get some answers once agin many thanks xxx
