Can anyone help me with my phobia??

I had a very bad year last year. My Mum died in March, my Dad in October and I lost my job!! This stress has manifested itself into a name phobia where I have to know names of people I see in and around town. I live in quite a small place so see lots of people, consequently, I am anxious when I go into town in case I see someone and can't remember thier name. I am currently having CBT and my psychologist is good. But, I feel I have come to a standstill as I can't seem to get any better and these names, or lack of them, make me feel very anxious. As a result I have become agrophobic and can't even go to the local supermarlet because of the people there. I do make myself go into town to try and face the fear but it is hard. I live a very long way from my family which is difficult .My husband, daughters and friends have been wonderfully supportive.Any advice would be very welcome to help me overcome this problem. Thanks

  • I totally understand hun been there done that and still regularly have battles, some I give into others I overcome but it didnt happen over night. A sense of humour is a must, its in there somewhere so learn to laugh at yourself, a titter here and there will do lol. I have to disarm my fears number one being will I die if I dont know/do, will it harm me/others. Whats the consequencies if I do or don't. That to me is shredding down that fear what ever it is, I use this for any struggle it gives me the power to take back what I am losing. For example what will happen if you dont know that womans name? Nothing but the stress is too much, then take control and name her,Mrs Brown hat, Mrs poodle, Mr Vauxhall Astra. What a giggle and its your secret too! If by chance you come to speak with the person you can easily add or replace.

We do have to overcome these fears whatever the type and it can happen honest. xx

  • Go to your gp and get referred off to a behavioural therapist. I did and it worked for me.

  • Thanks so much for your answers . It is so good to be on a site where someone understands what you are going through. I will put your answers into practice and already have a smile on my face jennieccles thinking of funny names and what's the worst that can happen to me if I don't recall their name. Thanks so much to you both. xx
