Aaaargh! Haven't finished assignment

Why do I always leave finishing homework til the last day? Have still got half of it to do and will be handing it in tomorrow. Struggling with academic stuff after not being in school since the 70's and getting really annoyed with myself for not being able to get things down on paper when in my head I'm perfectly able to do the work. I'm up early and could be doing it now but keep finding other things to do - reading posts on here for example. Hope you all have a good sunday!

set yourself just 45 minutes where you will sit at your desk (or wherever you work) and have nothing around/open to distract you. put your phone on the other side of the room and don't open the HealthUnlocked tab! then after the 45 minutes are up, 30 minutes of whatever you want to do. keep doing this until you get somewhere :) hope it helps xx

Hi tazmania - just opened my laptop to type up some stuff I'd managed to write out manually and automatically checked my messages. Your advice sounds like it might work and although I am replying to you, I'll do as you suggest and get off this site!...... Thanks! x

Hello, Amanda

Sad to say I understand how you must be feeling I am now in my sixties and I prefer to do what I want, and eventually I have that problem where things get left and I have been known to get wrong from my wife.

Generally part of my problem I have a view and I will sit with a pair of binocs and forget what I was supposed to do until it is to late

When it comes to papers I normally try and work for 30mins, then stop for 15mins and carry on like that for a couple of hours and take a break for lunch or a meal. Generally I find that it is wrong too cram especially with a depression as I find my brain just cannot take to much in at any given time.

One thing here is my dog, Pax. if He wants attention will try and push the laptop of my knee so that is His way to cause a diversion.

All I can suggest is do not cram and put time to one side where you have to do your studies, you will need to be firm with yourself.

One thing I can say is do not have a Collie, mine loves pressing buttons with His nose, and now His new trick He performs is to adjust my seat with His nose if He feels not getting His fifteen mins worth

Good Luck

BOB

Hi Bob - yes, I can see you have the same problems regarding getting on with things. I know I need to be more disciplined but it can be overwhelming, and yes, depressive illness can make anything too much to cope with. Your dog sounds great fun and, having 2 little dogs myself, I know how distracting they can be!

Your advice is almost the same as tazmania's (above) so I'm sure it will be very helpful if only I can make myself stick to it! I'll get back to my work now but allow myself a break in half an hour. Cheers for that!

Ha ha Amanda I was exactly the same when I was a mature student too. I think it's something to do with needing the added pressure to produce your best work. Don't panic though as it always gets done doesn't it even if it means burning the midnight oil. x

Thanks for the support! Have now finished after following good advice from guys on here - you know who you are! :-) Don't think I've met the remit properly but - hey ho - I've got work to hand in tomorrow night.

Rewarded myself with nice walk with dogs and now enjoying a glass of vino - cheers all! x

Firstly I could selflessly give you my homework (which is last minute) to do as well if you think that would help...lol.

Now I don't know but would it help to get one of those dictaphone thingys to get your thoughts out?

Check in the dyslexia group on here (even if you aren't dyslexic and they may have top tips for note taking). By now wouldn't surprise me if you could dictate something and have it run out on your computer?

Anyway you failed to say what the assignment is about? Can we/I help in anyway bat a few ideas about?

My homework is nothing compared to your sorry. I just have to runs some stuff out and write up a few short notes. The word assignment seems like a much larger proposition.

You know there is something to be said for just starting even if its slowly. When i used to have write essays I almost cleaned behind the fridge to get away from it, but once I sat down and started it wasnt so bad.

Hi Caroline. Great to have a bit of support from folk on the site! You obviously understand the difficulty in actually getting anything done and I, too, seem to find endless chores needing immediate attention rather than the dreaded homework! Yes, the word 'assignment' is perhaps a little grand for the amount of work I have to complete - I'm making more of it than is necessary I expect. I'm training to be a counsellor alongside being a long-term depressive which probably makes me perfectly suited for this kind of work - :-)........... or not.......... who knows? I'll just peg away at it and hope I achieve something, sometime. What are you studying? The Dictaphone idea is worth a try - I do actually have one so might try that. Would never have thought about a dyslexia forum but I'm willing to look at that too. Anyway - I have got something to hand in tomorrow night having followed advice from some of the others here and am now downing a glass of vino. Hugs to you too xx

Design, Im a designer by trade, my homework is to do with that, not drawing but research, I can end up writing as many essays as you :-) And doing designs. People think its easy but it really stretches your brain and your abilities.

Blimey councelling thats a big subject fraught with Freudian slips and balmy people like me. I'd hold on to your knickers lady sounds like a big (but rewarding ride!). Good for you.

Well one thing you can say its never going to be boring, fishing about in peoples brains!

Freudian slips eh? Balmy? Barmy? Must look into that one - ;-) Designer sounds very cool. What kind of design? I have eclectic taste in most things and can get bored very easily - have just treated myself to a diamante reindeer (full size) in the sales. He has pride of place in my... errr...... trophy room, but that's another story. Hope you're having a good evening. xx

I have to away to work, but a trophy room for a budding councellor sounds all good to me :-)

Bring me the head of Gabriel Garcia Marquez :-) I know my 'Sorry I haven't a Clue'z.

Balmy night, Barmy me? I'm dyslexic Im allowed to slip up regularly...lol.

I have reserve my design specifics for now I give too much away on here as it is and part of me supposed to be incognito :-)

By the way, not that I will remember but is it in fact Councellor or Councillor or Counsellor or neither!? Does it start with a silent PH :-)

LOL

Wasn't it Alfredo? Oh wow! a mysterious incognito designer..... how intriguing. to make it easier it's therapist and it always starts with a silent PH ............ Very amusing :-D xx

amanda_123 in reply to CarolineLondon

Funny - I thought Frasier was a Thychiatrist but I'm still training. I'm away to my bed now to travel Freud's royal road to the unconscious. Great chatting. xx
