Are people with diabetes at a higher risk for gum disease and other dental problems?

My child is having diabetes and taking medicines for the same. Nowadays there are some problems with her gums. Her gums become reddish and swollen. Sometimes it's bleeding too. She can't afford the bad breath due to this. This bad breath is also an annoyance for those who talk to her. Then I gave some home remedies. But it didn't work. Anyways I am planning to schedule a dental consultation for her at dentistry for children in Toronto( treehousedentalcare.ca/site... ). I came to know that people with diabetes are at a higher risk for gum disease and other dental problems. So it is important to give more care to this. So I am planning to consult the dentist, coming Friday. Before that, I would like to know the experiences of others who dealt with this condition.

Leaving aside the diabetes for a moment. Could I ask about your child’s oral hygiene regime? Does she brush her teeth regularly? How often does she visit dentist for check up? Is her diet high in sugar?
